Aosta's international short film festival: five days of short cinema, resistance, and community
Bref - International Short Film Festival is the short film festival of the capital of Valle d'Aosta, established in 2025 on the initiative of Aiace Valle d'Aosta. The event transforms Aosta's Spazio Plus into a hub dedicated to cinema in all its facets, with a program that intertwines competitive screenings, previews, retrospectives, workshops, literary aperitifs, and professional meetings for industry insiders.
The heart of the festival is the international and national competition: dozens of short films selected from hundreds of hours of viewing, with a jury awarding prizes to the best works. Alongside the competition, thematic sections give identity to the festival: Fight For Your Rights! dedicated to cinema of resistance and rights, Cine-Passage on francophone cinema — consistent with the bilingual nature of Valle d'Aosta — and CreepShorts for lovers of horror and fantasy cinema. Each edition also features a guest country and a monographic retrospective.
Bref has a strong civic mission: one day of the festival is traditionally dedicated to the Resistance, with screenings, convivial moments, and meetings open to all ages. Alongside cinema, the festival offers workshops for children and young people, meetings with directors, and literary aperitifs, creating a community event in the heart of Aosta. Admission is free, confirming the intention to bring a wider audience closer to the language of short films.
The second edition of Bref doubles the numbers from its debut: 76 short films from 34 countries, including 29 Italian or European premieres and 63 in competition (39 in the international section, 7 in the national competition, plus the Superbref and Minibref sections dedicated to younger audiences). Aosta's Spazio Plus once again serves as the festival's headquarters. Among the new features is Lebanon as the guest country, with five shorts curated by the Beirut Shorts International Film Festival in the In Spasso con Aiace section, and a retrospective dedicated to the pioneer of experimental cinema, Maya Deren. April 25th is dedicated to the Resistance, with a community lunch and themed screenings. Organized by Aiace Valle d'Aosta.
