A sacred performance celebrating rebirth in the neighborhood of Father Pino Puglisi
The Brancaccio Living Nativity is a sacred performance that brings the eastern district of Palermo to life during the Epiphany. Titled "A Nativity for all, a symbol of life and hope," the event stages the nativity with dozens of actors, ancient trades, and scenes of daily life, giving the neighborhood one of the most well-attended events ever held in the area. It is more than just a nativity scene: it is the collective story of a community reclaiming its own narrative.
Brancaccio is the land of Blessed Pino Puglisi, the parish priest of San Gaetano murdered by the mafia in 1993 for his educational and social commitment to the youth. It is within this context of deep symbolic value that the living nativity was born, promoted by the San Gaetano Parish together with a network of fifteen associations, three parishes, and the II District. The performance thus becomes a gesture of hope and redemption, capable of uniting faith, culture, and active citizenship.
The staging is hosted in the area of the Padre Nostro Reception Center, at Via Brancaccio 387, just a few steps from the parish. This is the space destined to become the future square of Brancaccio: choosing this location gives the event an additional layer of meaningโthat of urban regeneration, alongside its religious and traditional significance. The nativity scene traverses scenes and settings that reconstruct the atmosphere of Palestine at the time of the nativity, involving actors of all ages.
The living nativity was created with the ambition of involving the entire neighborhood and all the entities operating within it, from volunteer associations to parent committees, scout groups, and local parishes. The event is accompanied by choral moments designed as a public gesture of peace, in line with the spirit of a community that continues to build concrete alternatives to violence, carrying on the legacy of Father Puglisi.
For visitors, the Brancaccio Living Nativity is an opportunity to discover an authentic and supportive side of Palermo and Sicily, far from the most beaten tourist paths. Free admission and the grassroots setting make it an event suitable for families, children, and anyone wishing to experience the magic of the Epiphany immersed in the tradition of the living nativity, one of the most beloved forms of Sicilian popular religiosity.
