The patron saint's fires in the village of the Monti Dauni
Every year, in mid-January, the small village of Rocchetta Sant'Antonio, in the northern province of Foggia, on the borders between Puglia, Campania, and Basilicata, celebrates its patron saint with the Patronal Feast of Saint Anthony Abbot and the evocative night of the bonfires. It is the most cherished event on the local calendar, drawing not only residents but also returning emigrants and visitors from across the Monti Dauni area.
The highlight is the night of January 16th, the eve of the saint's liturgical feast. Large piles of straw and broom are erected in various spots throughout the historic center; once lit, they release massive tongues of fire that illuminate the entire village. Rooted in ancient peasant culture, the bonfires symbolize protection, purification, and community belonging. The evening comes alive with a torchlight procession, fireworks, and the spectacular bonfire competition, while the streets fill with a collective festive atmosphere.
Around the fires, the community offers residents and visitors rich buffets featuring spirits and local specialties. The evening culminates in the traditional post-bonfire dinner, whose signature dish is the famous ruoto di capuzza di agnello e patate, baked according to the pastoral recipes of the Monti Dauni. The patron saint's day, January 17th, continues with the tasting of pork 'soffritto' and other local food and wine delicacies.
On the day of Saint Anthony Abbot, January 17th, around noon, one of the most characteristic rituals is renewed: the blessing of domestic animals and livestock. Donkeys, cattle, horses, and pets are brought into town to receive the blessing, testifying to the historic bond between the hermit saint and the rural world, of which Saint Anthony is the traditional protector.
Among the most beloved customs is the distribution of gifts to children, a tradition in Rocchetta dating back to the post-WWII period, which renews a gesture of solidarity and hope between generations every year. There is also a collective visit to the mayor's home, an occasion for well-wishes that strengthens the relationship between institutions and citizens. It is no coincidence that the locals describe the festival as the village's true New Year.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Rocchetta Sant'Antonio together with the LiberaMente Cultural Association, which oversees its organization. Experiencing the bonfires of Saint Anthony Abbot means discovering an authentic corner of inland Puglia, dominated by the ducal castle and the panoramas of the Monti Dauni, where religious devotion, historical memory, and popular practices continue to intertwine in a festival of undiminished charm.
The 2026 edition, organized by the Municipality of Rocchetta Sant'Antonio with the LiberaMente Cultural Association, renewed the fire ritual in the Monti Dauni village. On the night of January 16th, the massive tongues of fire from the bonfires illuminated the entire village, accompanied by a torchlight procession, fireworks, and the bonfire competition. The community shared buffets with spirits and local products, along with the traditional post-bonfire dinner featuring the 'ruoto di capuzza di agnello e patate'. On January 17th, at noon, the blessing of domestic animals and livestock reaffirmed the saint's bond with the rural world, followed by the tasting of pork 'soffritto'.
Rocchetta Sant'Antonio is located in the northern province of Foggia, on the borders with Campania and Basilicata. By car, it can be reached from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Candela exit) or the SS655 Bradanica road. The reference railway station is Rocchetta Sant'Antonio-Lacedonia, on the Apennine line.
The festival takes place every year around January 15th-17th, with the night of the bonfires on the evening of the 16th and the blessing of the animals at noon on the 17th.
Participation is free and open to all; buffets, tastings, and the traditional dinner are offered to the community and visitors.
