Three days to discover the biodiversity of the Grigna Settentrionale Park
BioBlitz Lombardia is a citizen science initiative that invites citizens, families, and enthusiasts to become "naturalists for a day". For three days, expert naturalists and volunteers explore a protected area together to survey as many animal and plant species as possible, contributing to the knowledge of the territory's biodiversity. The Lecco edition takes place in the Grigna Settentrionale Regional Park, with a dedicated stop in Esino Lario, a municipality in the province of Lecco overlooking the Lecco branch of Lake Como.
In Esino Lario, BioBlitz offers guided excursions through valuable meadow and woodland environments: a morning outing towards Narele and an afternoon loop itinerary in the Ortanella area, around Monte Fopp, with suggestive views of the Grigna and the lake. Observations focus on local flora and fauna, with a particular emphasis, in the 2026 edition, on diurnal lepidoptera, i.e., butterflies that inhabit the mountain's meadows and woods.
Organized by the Valsassina Valvarrone Val d'Esino Riviera Mountain Community, BioBlitz is free and open to all, with mandatory registration. It is an opportunity to actively engage with nature, learn to identify species and environments, and experience Valsassina and the Grigna Park through the eyes of a naturalist, accompanied by experts and researchers.
The 2026 edition of BioBlitz Lombardia takes place from May 15 to 17 in the Grigna Settentrionale Regional Park, with a special focus on diurnal lepidoptera, the butterflies of the Grigna's meadows and woods.
Saturday, May 16 is dedicated to Esino Lario, with a morning outing to Narele and an afternoon loop itinerary in the Ortanella area, around Monte Fopp. All activities are free but require mandatory registration.
Focus of the edition: diurnal lepidoptera. Recommended equipment: layered clothing, hat, rain jacket, hiking boots, trekking poles, packed lunch, and water.
