Turner's masterpieces from the Tate, between watercolours and Italian landscapes, in Como
The exhibition "Turner. The Enchantment of Lake Como and the Italian Landscape" celebrates the bond between William Turner (1775-1851), master of English Romanticism, and the Italian landscape, with Lake Como as the protagonist. The exhibition is held in Como, the capital of the homonymous Province in Lombardy, between Palazzo del Broletto and the Pinacoteca Civica, and is realised in collaboration with the prestigious Tate of London.
The exhibition path brings together precious watercolours by Turner documenting his artistic evolution: from sketches made during his first trip to Italy in 1819 to colour studies from his stays in 1842-1843, up to the small compositions for the illustrated edition of Samuel Rogers' poem Italy. Works that testify to the painter's constant interest in light, colour, and the experience of places. The exhibition is curated by Elizabeth Brooke.
Alongside the original works, the exhibition features the immersive film JMW Turner On the Wing, produced by Tate Digital, which retraces the artist's life through his passion for travel. A way to introduce even the general public to Turner's figure and his revolutionary relationship with landscape painting.
The event is enriched by FEELING COLOUR, with site-specific installations by contemporary British artists Jim Lambie and David Batchelor, set up at San Pietro in Atrio: a dialogue between Turner's colour and the chromatic research of today's art, making Como, for one summer, a point of reference for international art.
