From midnight to dawn on two wheels, from the Baths of Caracalla to the Lepini Mountains
Bike Night Rome is the Lazio leg of the national night cycling tour created by Witoor. In 2026, it reached its twelfth overall edition and was hosted in the Capital for the first time. This is not a race: it is a non-competitive, free-paced ride that starts at midnight from the Baths of Caracalla in the heart of Rome and concludes at dawn in the province of Latina. The format is the signature style that has made Bike Night famous across Italy: a midnight start, darkness, red taillights in a single file, and an arrival at the first light of day.
The track measures approximately 95 kilometers with over 1500 meters of elevation gain, alternating between diverse surfaces: ancient basalt, cobblestones, dirt, grass, and asphalt. After a escorted start toward Porta San Sebastiano, cyclists enter the Appian Way, one of the most evocative stretches of the entire event, before climbing toward the Castelli Romani. The group rides past Lake Albano and Castel Gandolfo, touches Nemi with its volcanic lake, continues through Velletri, and reaches Cori near the Temple of Hercules, before descending toward Lake Giulianello and the foothills of the Lepini Mountains. The finish line is at Tenuta Antoniana, between Bassiano and Sezze, in the province of Latina.
The formula is designed to welcome cyclists of all levels: there are no rankings or time limits. The route is marked and available as a GPX track, and three refreshment stops with mechanical and medical assistance are provided along the way. The first riders arrive around 5:30 AM, while the last ones finish around 9:00 AM. At the end, everyone gathers for a shared breakfast, which has always been the true social highlight of Bike Night: a chance to share stories of the night just passed before returning to Rome via shuttle buses equipped for bicycle transport.
Due to the basalt sections of the Appian Way and the dirt tracks of Lazio, the organizers recommend mountain bikes, gravel bikes, and e-bikes (MTB or gravel versions), while road bikes with thin tires are not suitable. Efficient lighting, a reflective vest, and a spare inner tube are mandatory. Those without a suitable bicycle can rent one through Regina Bike, the event's technical partner.
Beyond the night in the saddle, Bike Night Rome was created to showcase the cycle paths of Lazio and sustainable mobility. The Roman edition was built with the involvement of local authorities and associations such as FIAB Rome, the Italian Touring Club, and Legambiente, with the goal of demonstrating how accessible the territory between the Municipality of Rome, the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, and the province of Latina is by bicycle. For organizer Simone Dovigo, the Roman stage represents the major innovation of the 2026 Witoor project and aims to become a fixed appointment at the end of June.
The twelfth edition of the national Bike Night tour brought the Witoor night cycling format to Rome for the first time, in collaboration with Regina Bike. On the night between Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28, 2026, over 150 cyclists set off at midnight from the square of the Baths of Caracalla, escorted to Porta San Sebastiano, to tackle approximately 95 kilometers and 1500 meters of elevation gain.
The group rode along the Appian Way on the original basalt, climbed toward the Castelli Romani touching Lake Albano, Castel Gandolfo, and Nemi, crossed Velletri and Cori near the Temple of Hercules, and reached Lake Giulianello before the final descent to the foot of the Lepini Mountains. The first arrivals at Tenuta Antoniana were recorded around 5:30 AM, and the last ones just before 9:00 AM. Approximately 20% of the participants were women, with riders coming from Rome, the rest of Lazio, and other Italian regions.
The start is at the square of the Baths of Caracalla in Rome (Viale delle Terme di Caracalla). It can be reached from Roma Termini station by city bus or from the Circo Massimo Metro B stop, just a few minutes away by bike. The welcome village and bib collection open on Saturday afternoon/evening, with on-site registration starting at 8:00 PM.
Online registration is available on the bikenight.it website: early bird fee is 36 euros, followed by 42 euros and 48 euros in subsequent windows, up to 60 euros for on-site registration. The fee includes three refreshment stops, breakfast at the finish, mechanical and medical assistance, luggage transport, and a participation gadget.
Shuttle buses with bike racks run from the finish line back to Rome at 7:30 AM and at noon (approximately 28 euros, bicycle included). Alternatively, you can return by train from the Latina Scalo station, keeping in mind that bike spaces on regional trains are limited and cannot be reserved.
Bring powerful, fully charged front and rear lights, a reflective vest, a spare inner tube, and a light jacket for the hours before dawn, when the temperature drops even in summer.
