The Sacred Representation of the Passion and the Cedar Festival in the village of Bibbona
The Bibbona Easter is the most cherished annual event in the village of Bibbona, a small town in the province of Livorno, in the heart of the Etruscan Coast in Tuscany. For four days, from Good Friday to Easter Monday, the medieval historic center transforms into a grand open-air theater where spirituality, historical memory, and village festivities merge.
The most intense moment is the Sacred Representation of the Passion of Christ, a living Stations of the Cross that winds through the alleys and squares of the village on Good Friday evening. This performance, renewed for over fifty years, involves more than sixty local participants and is directed by Stefano Marmugi and Elena Pieri. The event, included in the Tuscan regional calendar of historical re-enactments, is also broadcast via live streaming, a testament to the deep bond between the community and this tradition.
On Easter Monday, the village lights up with the Cedar Festival, which dates back to the 15th century. The streets of the center fill with craft markets, food stalls featuring local products, dog training demonstrations, children's entertainment, and roaming street bands. The day culminates with the Cedar Tombola and, in the evening, the spectacular Barrel Palio, a challenge between the village districts accompanied by processions and flag-wavers.
Alongside the main events, the Bibbona Easter offers activities for all ages: the "Guardians of Time" treasure hunt designed for children, photography exhibitions set up in historic municipal spaces, and the traditional Easter Monday trekking through the scenic Bibbona countryside. It is the ideal opportunity to discover one of the most authentic villages on the Tuscan coast, far from the most crowded tourist routes.
Bibbona, with its medieval core perched on the hills just a few kilometers from the sea, offers visitors an experience that combines heritage, popular traditions, and hospitality. The Bibbona Easter represents the time of year when the identity of the Municipality of Bibbona is expressed with the greatest strength, attracting residents, tourists, and curious visitors from all over the province of Livorno and beyond.
The 2026 Bibbona Easter animated the village from April 3 to 6. On Friday, April 3, at 9:30 PM, the Sacred Representation of the Passion of Christ took place in the historic center, directed by Stefano Marmugi and Elena Pieri, with a live stream. On Sunday, April 5, at 5:00 PM, the "Guardians of Time" treasure hunt for children was held. On Monday, April 6, the Cedar Festival featured a market, food stalls, dog demonstrations, the Magicaboola street band, the Cedar Tombola, and in the evening, the 37th Barrel Palio.
By car: Bibbona can be reached via the SS1 Aurelia, taking the Bibbona exit, and is just a few kilometers from the coast. By train: the nearest stations are Cecina and Donoratico, connected to the village by local buses. By plane: Pisa and Florence airports.
The event takes place during the Easter period, from Good Friday to Easter Monday, in the historic center of Bibbona.
The Sacred Representation and most events are free to access. Some activities (children's treasure hunt, Easter Monday trekking) require registration or have an entry fee. Information is available at the Pro Loco of Bibbona, Piazza Colombo 4.
