About Biancoazzurra Medieval Festival

Every spring, the Rione Cassero transforms the square at the base of the ancient Cassero Fortress in Castiglion Fiorentino into an authentic medieval village. With jesters, fire-eaters, flag-wavers, equestrian shows, period music, and taverns serving traditional dishes, the Biancoazzurra Medieval Festival leads the town toward its most anticipated time of year: the Palio. Admission is free, and the grand finale features a spectacular fireworks display illuminating the tower.

A district festival in the heart of the Valdichiana

The Biancoazzurra Medieval Festival is the signature event of the Rione Cassero, one of the vibrant districts that bring Castiglion Fiorentino to life, a charming town in the Province of Arezzo, Tuscany. For several evenings between late May and early June, the square at the foot of the Cassero Fortress is transformed into a lively medieval village, complete with shimmering armor, flags fluttering in the breeze, and flavors from a bygone era. The re-enactment, reaching its twenty-third edition in 2026, is much more than a show: it is a way for the community to come together and prepare for the most heartfelt time of the year for locals, the Palio.

The setting: The Cassero Tower

The heart of the festival is the evocative Cassero Fortress, a defensive structure that has dominated Castiglion Fiorentino and the entire Valdichiana valley for nearly seven hundred years. At the foot of the tower, the square is draped in history and legend: artisans at work, medieval market stalls, street performers, and scenic corners welcome visitors into an atmosphere that transports them back through the centuries, preserving the charm of the ancient village.

Shows and entertainment

The program is rich and designed for all ages. Among the attractions that return every year are:

  • Jesters, magicians, and fire-eaters entertaining the public along the village streets;
  • Drummers and flag-wavers, featuring the "Il Cassero" Musicians and Flag-wavers group;
  • Swordsmen and demonstrations of ancient martial arts;
  • Equestrian shows and horse-riding skill trials;
  • Medieval music and melodies echoing through the squares;
  • a splendid medieval market with handicrafts and local products.

The event concludes with the "Fire and Music" fireworks display, which lights up the Cassero Tower in an emotional finale.

The taverns

A central pillar of the festival is the district's taverns, where you can enjoy traditional local dishes served in medieval style, accompanied by excellent wines and craft beers. On public holidays, the taverns remain open for lunch, making the Biancoazzurra Medieval Festival a convivial opportunity to discover the cuisine of the Aretine Valdichiana.

Towards the Palio

The Biancoazzurra Medieval Festival is not an isolated event: it is part of the rich season of events in Castiglion Fiorentino and engages with the Maggio Castiglionese, guiding the town toward the Palio, the challenge between the districts that represents the most anticipated moment of the year. Participating in the festival means experiencing the local spirit of the Cassero community and breathing in the pride of its people.

Biancoazzurra Medieval Festival — edition 2026

The 23rd edition of the Biancoazzurra Medieval Festival took place from May 29 to 31 and on June 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7, 2026, bringing the Piazzale del Cassero in Castiglion Fiorentino to life. The Rione Cassero once again hosted its grand re-enactment featuring shows, taverns, and a medieval market, with the traditional fireworks finale at the foot of the tower.

Biancoazzurra Medieval Festival 2026 — 23rd edition

The 2026 edition of the Biancoazzurra Medieval Festival confirmed the formula loved by locals and visitors alike: the square of the Cassero Fortress transformed into a medieval village, with jesters, magicians, drummers, fire-eaters, swordsmen, and flag-wavers populating the evenings. There was no shortage of equestrian shows, medieval music and melodies, and the splendid market.

The district's taverns offered traditional dishes accompanied by wines and craft beers, remaining open for lunch on holidays. As per tradition, admission to the festival and all shows was free. The grand finale was entrusted to the "Fire and Music" fireworks display, which illuminated the Cassero Tower, guiding the city toward the Palio season.
