The official commemoration of the Resistance Martyrs at Capanne di Marcarolo
The Benedicta Massacre is the most tragic and symbolic chapter of the Resistance in Piedmont. Between April 5 and 11, 1944, during Holy Week, partisan groups gathered around the Benedicta farmhouse in the municipality of Bosio (Province of Alessandria) were surrounded by a massive Nazi-fascist roundup. Over 150 young men were executed on the spot, while just as many were captured and deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp, from which they never returned. It is considered the largest massacre of partisan fighters in the entire Italian Resistance.
The commemoration takes place every year at the Shrine of the Benedicta Martyrs, nestled in the rugged and silent landscape of the Ligurian-Piedmontese Apennines, in the Capanne di Marcarolo area, within the natural park that serves as a natural border between Piedmont and Liguria. The memorial, the ruins of the farmhouse, and the Cascina Moglioni Ecomuseum form a path of memory that welcomes thousands of people every spring from Alessandria, Genoa, and across the North-West.
The official ceremony opens in the morning with the gathering of authorities and a tribute to the fallen, accompanied by student readings and a marching band. This is followed by an open-air Holy Mass, celebrated by a high-ranking Church representative, and the official oration, entrusted each year to a figure from the civil, political, or cultural world. In the afternoon, the day continues with a walk along the Path of Peace and a moment of historical reflection.
A series of cultural initiatives curated by the Associazione Memoria della Benedicta revolve around the main date, from the Benedicta Evening in Alessandria to conferences, photo exhibitions, and theatrical and musical performances. The stated goal is not only to remember but to question how to keep the political and civil legacy of the Resistance alive for new generations.

The Benedicta Shrine is located in Capanne di Marcarolo, in the municipality of Bosio (AL). By car, it can be reached from the Ovada motorway exit (A26) or from Genoa via the Stura Valley; the final roads are mountain roads, and for the commemoration, it is recommended to follow the signs for the designated parking areas. The nearest train station is in Ovada.
The official commemoration is held every year in the first half of April, near the anniversary of the massacre (April 5-11, 1944).
Participation in the ceremony is free and open to all. As it is a mountain site, layered clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended, especially for those intending to walk the Path of Peace in the afternoon.
