The Patronal Feast of Fresonara

The Patronal Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is the most important religious event in Fresonara, a small village of about 600 inhabitants located in the Province of Alessandria, in the heart of the Lower Piedmont plains. It is celebrated every year on September 8th, the day the Church commemorates the birth of the Virgin Mary, to whom the village's parish church is dedicated.

The Parish Church

The focal point of the celebration is the Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, a 16th-century building that serves as the historical and spiritual heart of Fresonara. Along with the Oratory of San Rocco and the Chapel of San Glicerio, it is one of the three places of worship in the village. The parish church houses the statue of the Madonna, which is carried in procession through the streets on the day of the feast.

The Procession and Traditional Dances

Following the solemn Holy Mass, held in the late afternoon, the procession begins through the streets of Fresonara, with the statue of the Madonna carried on the shoulders of the faithful. A particularly distinctive moment occurs when the bearers, before returning to the church, perform traditional movements and dances with the statue: a gesture of popular devotion passed down through generations that makes the Fresonara feast unique.

A Community in Celebration

Beyond the religious aspect, the patronal day has always been an opportunity for the entire community to gather. Celebrations and festivities take place in the historic areas of the village, particularly at the Sports Field and Piazza don Orione, the center of social life in Fresonara. The feast thus combines Marian devotion with the conviviality typical of Piedmontese village festivals.

A Village with a Long History

Fresonara, first mentioned with the toponym Frisinaria in 969 when the territory was donated to the monastery of San Salvatore in Pavia, is a village with ancient roots. The feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is one of the three main religious occurrences in the village, along with the Feast of the Madonna delle Grazie (Madonna Nuova) in June and the Feast of San Rocco in August. Celebrating September 8th in Fresonara means immersing yourself in the authentic popular traditions of rural Piedmont.
