The autumn patronal fair of Serravalle Scrivia, featuring markets, polenta, and roasted chestnuts
The San Martino Fair is one of the most cherished autumn events in Serravalle Scrivia, a town in the Province of Alessandria, Piedmont. Every year, on the Sunday closest to November 11th, the village transforms into a large open-air market dedicated to its patron saint, attracting visitors from across Lower Piedmont and nearby Liguria.
The festival is rooted in the popular devotion to Saint Martin of Tours: historical research traces the local cult of the saint back to 1229, the year the Pieve di San Martino was consecrated. Today, the community still gathers in the parish church of Santi Martino e Stefano, while the fair celebrates the rural essence of the occasion, marking the end of the harvest season and the tapping of the new wine.
The heart of the event is the large street market that takes over the streets and squares of the center: Piazza Paolo Bosio, Via Brodolini, Via Divano, and Via Gramsci host a variety of goods alongside selected stalls of fine craftsmanship, traditional food and wine products, quality retail, and small curiosities. There is also a showcase for social and volunteer organizations, giving space to local associations.
The San Martino Fair is also a celebration of autumn flavors. In Piazza Paolo Bosio, the Pro Loco offers a lunch featuring mushroom polenta, fondue, and traditional desserts, with options carefully prepared for vegetarians and those who do not eat pork. In the afternoon, fritters and the essential roasted chestnuts arrive, while the Alpini Group warms up the day with mulled wine, tea, and hot chocolate.
The day is the perfect opportunity to discover the heritage of Serravalle Scrivia. The Libarna Museum Hall, dedicated to the ancient Roman city that once stood in this area, opens for free with guided tours, while the Confraternities guide the public in discovering the ancient oratories. For the little ones, a traditional funfair is set up in Piazza Coppi. A mix of tradition, gastronomy, culture, and entertainment that makes the San Martino Fair an unmissable event for families and fans of village festivals.
