Epiphany on the Paganella Plateau with torchlight processions, bonfires, and the Befana descending from the bell tower
In the heart of winter, when the Paganella Plateau is blanketed in snow, the village of Andalo, in the province of Trento, bids farewell to the holiday season with one of the most beloved events for families: the Befana Torchlight Procession. This festival marks the end of the season of lights and Christmas markets, celebrating the Epiphany according to an ancient Trentino custom that involves lighting fires on the eve of January 6th, symbolizing a farewell to the old year and well-wishes for the new one.
On the evening of January 5th, the meeting point is Piazza Dolomiti, the beating heart of Andalo. From here, the torchlight procession begins, accompanied by the music of performers in costume, winding through the town center to the parish church square. Upon arrival, a large bonfire is lit: according to legend, the Befana brings small treats to "good" children and coal to the "naughty" ones, and it is around the fire that the anticipation reaches its peak. The most thrilling moment is when the Befana descends from the bell tower with her sack filled with candies, sweets, and surprises to distribute to all the little ones. For adults, the evening continues with hot tea and mulled wine.
The celebration doesn't end with the torchlight procession: on Epiphany day, the Befana returns to Andalo in a horse-drawn carriage for a second event dedicated to children and the distribution of sweets. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the mountain atmosphere during the day, among the streets of the village and the slopes of the Paganella Plateau.
The Befana Torchlight Procession in Andalo is part of a rich calendar of Epiphany events that bring the entire Paganella Plateau to life, with similar gatherings in the nearby villages of Molveno and Fai della Paganella. The event is organized by the Municipality of Andalo in collaboration with the Molveno Alpine Rescue, which ensures the safety of the procession. An authentic opportunity to discover the folk traditions of Trentino-Alto Adige in a stunning alpine setting.
The 2026 Befana Torchlight Procession concluded the holiday festivities on the Paganella Plateau with two days dedicated to the Epiphany and families, following the village of Andalo's now-traditional format.
