A celebration of Sicilian folk roots in the heart of the Madonie mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, in the heart of summer, the village of Petralia Soprana transforms into an open-air stage for Batraliah Fest, an event that weaves together culture, entertainment, and music. Promoted by the Municipal Youth Council, the festival aims to showcase the town and keep Sicilian folk traditions alive, bridging the past and present through performances, folk dance groups, workshops, and exhibitions.
The festival takes its name from Batraliah, the term used by the Arabs in the 9th century to rename this Madonie settlement. It evokes the idea of a "high stone," perfectly reflecting the village's position as the highest municipality in the Madonie Park. Petralia Soprana, officially recognized as one of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages, boasts a stone-built historic center filled with churches, noble palaces, and viewpoints overlooking the mountainsโa stunning backdrop that Batraliah Fest shares with the community and visitors alike.
The festival is structured to appeal to all ages. The afternoon features an orienteering-style "folk traditions" treasure hunt, designed to engage children and teenagers as they explore the village's most charming corners, discovering local curiosities, ancient crafts, traditional products, and poetry. By night, Piazza Duomo becomes the heart of the celebration with a major free concert.
Over the years, Batraliah Fest has brought prominent names from the Italian roots and world music scene to Petralia Soprana. In 2024, the stage featured Eugenio Bennato, a legendary voice in the revival of Southern Italian folk music, while 2025 saw the arrival of the Sicilian collective Shakalab, one of Italy's most influential reggae and urban acts, known for blending reggae, hip hop, dub, and Mediterranean influences.
As a key highlight of the summer calendar in Petralia Soprana, located in the province of Palermo in the heart of inland Sicily, Batraliah Fest complements other seasonal initiatives like the 'Romantic Night of the Most Beautiful Villages' and local summer markets. For those visiting the Madonie in summer, it is the perfect opportunity to experience the village in its most authentic and festive spirit, surrounded by music, community, and tradition.
Batraliah Fest returns to Petralia Soprana for summer 2026, continuing the now-established tradition of celebrating Sicilian folk heritage and live music in the heart of the Madonie village. At this time, the exact dates and the 2026 program have not yet been published by the organizers. The event is promoted by the Municipal Youth Council and takes place in Piazza Duomo and the streets of the historic center. Batraliah Fest enlivens the historic center of Petralia Soprana (PA); the evening concert takes place in Piazza Duomo, the heart of the medieval village.
By car: Petralia Soprana is accessible via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (take the Tre Monzelli or Irosa exit) and then follow the SS120 towards the Madonie. The drive from Palermo takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. The nearest train station is Castellana-Sclafani on the Palermo-Catania line, though the village is best reached by private vehicle.
The evening concert in Piazza Duomo is typically free of charge. The afternoon treasure hunt is open to children and teenagers.
