The winter festival in the lakeside village, in the heart of the Abruzzo National Park
Barrea Winter Charms is the winter festival that enlivens the historic center of Barrea, one of the most beautiful and characteristic villages in the province of L'Aquila, perched above its lake in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. From December 20th through February, the village transforms into a widespread stage where tradition, conviviality, and mountain landscapes intertwine along the streets and squares of the medieval hamlet.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Vallis Regia APS with the support of the Barrea Municipal Administration, local associations, and the village's business community. It serves as the natural winter continuation of "Summer Charms," the calendar that accompanies the village during the warmer months: two sides of a single project that celebrates the identity of the Barrea community throughout the year.
The festival kicks off with Arts and Flavors in the Village, featuring guided tours, street performances, and tastings of local products along the alleys of the historic center. The Christmas season is marked by events eagerly awaited by both adults and children:
Among the most evocative displays is the Barrea Nativity Scene, which can be visited at the Ducal Palace in Piazza Umberto I from December 20th to January 6th. The heart of popular tradition is the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot on January 17th, featuring the blessing of the fire and animals in Piazza Umberto I, a ritual that connects the village to its rural and pastoral roots.
For the little ones, the Art and Nature for Children creative workshops continue for weeks, while the proximity to ski lifts and snow-covered trails allows visitors to experience Barrea as a destination for winter sports and snow activities, from hiking to initiatives organized by the local Ski Club. Strolling through the village, among the stone houses and the view of the frozen lake, is in itself one of the most enchanting experiences of the Abruzzo winter.
Far from the summer crowds, Barrea in winter offers a cozy and authentic atmosphere, defined by silence, lit fireplaces, mountain flavors, and the magic of Christmas in one of the iconic villages of the central Apennines. A festival designed for residents and visitors who wish to discover another side of Abruzzo: the slow, intimate pace of the cold season.
The festival kicked off on December 20th and 21st with Arts and Flavors in the Village, featuring guided tours, street performances, and tastings. The Christmas calendar included the Concert by the Decima Sinfonia of Pescasseroli (December 21, Church of San Tommaso Apostolo), the Arrival of Santa Claus (December 24, Piazza Mammarino), and the gastronomic evening with the "Barrea in Bloom" awards (December 27). The Barrea Nativity Scene was set up at the Ducal Palace from December 20th to January 6th, with the Arrival of the Befana on Epiphany. The Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot on January 17th brought the blessing of the fire and animals to Piazza Umberto I, while the Art and Nature for Children workshops accompanied the little ones from January 3rd to February 21st.
Barrea can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (Pescina or Cocullo exit), continuing towards the Sangro Valley and the National Park; from the south via the SS83 Marsicana road. The nearest train station is Alfedena-Scontrone on the Sulmona-Isernia line. In winter, please check mountain road conditions and the requirement for snow chains.
Events take place in the historic center of Barrea: Piazza Umberto I, Piazza Mammarino, the Ducal Palace, the Church of San Tommaso Apostolo, the Ex-Camoscina Hall, and the former Town Hall.
