About Winter Charms

Barrea Winter Charms is the festival that brings the lakeside village to life between December and February, nestled in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. Organized by the Pro Loco Vallis Regia APS in collaboration with the Municipality of Barrea, it blends culture, gastronomy, music, cinema, and activities for families and children. Christmas markets, an artistic nativity scene, the arrival of Santa Claus and the Befana, concerts in the Church of San Tommaso Apostolo, bingo nights, film screenings, and the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot enliven the squares and historic center, set against a backdrop of festive atmosphere and snow-capped mountains.

A winter of charm in the lakeside village

Barrea Winter Charms is the winter festival that enlivens the historic center of Barrea, one of the most beautiful and characteristic villages in the province of L'Aquila, perched above its lake in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. From December 20th through February, the village transforms into a widespread stage where tradition, conviviality, and mountain landscapes intertwine along the streets and squares of the medieval hamlet.

The event is organized by the Pro Loco Vallis Regia APS with the support of the Barrea Municipal Administration, local associations, and the village's business community. It serves as the natural winter continuation of "Summer Charms," the calendar that accompanies the village during the warmer months: two sides of a single project that celebrates the identity of the Barrea community throughout the year.

The program from December to February

The festival kicks off with Arts and Flavors in the Village, featuring guided tours, street performances, and tastings of local products along the alleys of the historic center. The Christmas season is marked by events eagerly awaited by both adults and children:

  • Concert by the Decima Sinfonia of Pescasseroli in the Church of San Tommaso Apostolo
  • Arrival of Santa Claus in Piazza Mammarino on Christmas Eve
  • Gastronomic evening with the awards ceremony for the "Barrea in Bloom" competition at the Ex-Camoscina Hall
  • Bingo nights in local venues and film screenings for families at the former Town Hall
  • Arrival of the Befana on Epiphany

The nativity scene and traditions

Among the most evocative displays is the Barrea Nativity Scene, which can be visited at the Ducal Palace in Piazza Umberto I from December 20th to January 6th. The heart of popular tradition is the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot on January 17th, featuring the blessing of the fire and animals in Piazza Umberto I, a ritual that connects the village to its rural and pastoral roots.

Activities for children and the mountains

For the little ones, the Art and Nature for Children creative workshops continue for weeks, while the proximity to ski lifts and snow-covered trails allows visitors to experience Barrea as a destination for winter sports and snow activities, from hiking to initiatives organized by the local Ski Club. Strolling through the village, among the stone houses and the view of the frozen lake, is in itself one of the most enchanting experiences of the Abruzzo winter.

Why visit Barrea in winter

Far from the summer crowds, Barrea in winter offers a cozy and authentic atmosphere, defined by silence, lit fireplaces, mountain flavors, and the magic of Christmas in one of the iconic villages of the central Apennines. A festival designed for residents and visitors who wish to discover another side of Abruzzo: the slow, intimate pace of the cold season.
