A trail running race through the dirt paths of the Etruscan Necropolis of Cerveteri
The Banditaccia Trail is a trail running race held in the territory of Cerveteri, a historic town in the Metropolitan City of Rome, in the Lazio region. The event is designed for trail running enthusiasts and those who wish to experience sport while immersed in one of Italy's most evocative archaeological landscapes: the Etruscan Necropolis of the Banditaccia, where the race begins.
The track measures 13 kilometers and winds almost entirely along dirt roads and country paths, with a predominantly flat profile that becomes technical on natural terrain. The start and finish lines are located in the area in front of the entrance to the Banditaccia Necropolis, the symbolic heart of the entire event. Trail shoes and a personal water supply are required for safety, and the maximum time to complete the course is three hours.
Since 2004, the Banditaccia Necropolis, along with the Monterozzi Necropolis in Tarquinia, has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It spans approximately twenty hectares and is crossed by a two-kilometer-long sepulchral road, dotted with hundreds of mounds that recount Etruscan civilization from the Villanovan period to the Hellenistic age. Running along the paths surrounding this extraordinary site means traversing over two thousand years of history in a unique dialogue between sport and archaeology.
The event is organized by ASD Bravetta Runners, in collaboration with Fotoforgo, with timing provided by Race Chrono Service. The race is limited to a maximum of 650 participants and is reserved for adult athletes with valid registration and a competitive medical certificate. At the end of the race, awards will be presented to the top three overall finishers, the top three in each category, and the largest teams.
The Banditaccia Trail is part of the rich Lazio running calendar and represents an opportunity to introduce Cerveteri to runners from outside the province. Beyond the competition, the day is an invitation to discover the territory of ancient Caere, between monumental necropolises, countryside, and the nearby Tyrrhenian coast, in a blend of physical activity, nature, and culture that defines the identity of the municipality.
The event debuted on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, in the territory of Cerveteri, Lazio. The meeting point was set for 7:00 AM and the start for 9:00 AM, in front of the entrance to the Etruscan Necropolis of the Banditaccia. Athletes tackled a 13-kilometer track on dirt terrain, with a maximum time of three hours. The race, limited to a maximum of 650 participants, was reserved for registered adults with a competitive medical certificate. At the finish line, the top three overall finishers, the top three in each category, and the largest teams were awarded.
Bib collection with race pack was also available the day before (Monday, June 1) from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM at Todaro Sport, Via Antonio Gramsci 5, Ladispoli.
Cerveteri can be reached by car via the A12 Rome-Civitavecchia motorway (Cerveteri-Ladispoli exit) or the Via Aurelia (SS1). By train, the reference station is Marina di Cerveteri-Ladispoli on the Rome-Pisa line, connected to the town center by local buses. The starting area is located at the entrance to the Etruscan Necropolis of the Banditaccia.
