The patronal feast of Barbarano Romano

The Saint Barbara Festival is the most anticipated event of the year for Barbarano Romano, a small medieval village perched on a tuff spur in the heart of the Tuscia region, in the province of Viterbo (Lazio). Every December 4th, the entire community gathers around its patron saint, a martyr venerated for centuries, in a day that weaves together religious devotion, music, and folk traditions passed down through generations.

The procession and the relic

The heart of the festival is the procession with the saint's relic, which winds through the alleys and small squares of the historic center, accompanied by a brass band. The parade moves along the three parallel streets and the medieval walls, while residents display drapes and decorations at their windows. The religious solemnity is marked by Eucharistic celebrations in honor of Saint Barbara, traditionally invoked as a protector against fire, lightning, and sudden dangers.

Firecrackers, fireworks, and joy

As per tradition, the day is punctuated by firecracker blasts and culminates in the evening with a fireworks display that illuminates the sky above the village and the Marturanum Regional Park. The festive atmosphere engages all ages in a spirit of sharing that unites the locals and visitors from the surrounding towns of the Tuscia area.

The improvised poetry competition

The most distinctive and identity-defining element of the Saint Barbara Festival is the competition of 'poeti a braccio': performers of improvised folk rhymes who challenge each other on free themes and witty banter, using the obligatory 'ottava rima' (AB AB AB CC rhyme scheme). This is an ancient form of extemporaneous poetry, still alive in some villages of Upper Lazio and the Tuscia, which turns the square into a stage of sharp wit, repartee, and rural wisdom.

A village between the Etruscans and the Middle Ages

Experiencing the festival is also an opportunity to discover Barbarano Romano, listed among the most charming villages in Lazio. The town is located within the Marturanum Regional Park and guards the extraordinary San Giuliano rock necropolis nearby, one of the most important Etruscan sites in southern Etruria, featuring tombs carved into the tuff. The historic center preserves medieval churches, defensive walls, and narrow alleys that make a visit feel like a journey through time.
