A run between two lakes in Lazio

The Trail dei due Laghi is the nature running event that wraps up the racing season in Anguillara Sabazia, a village overlooking Lake Bracciano in the Metropolitan City of Rome, Lazio. The event, also known as the Urban Trail dei 2 Laghi, is organized by the ASD Trail dei due Laghi and takes its name from the two bodies of water that define the area: the large Lake Bracciano and the smaller, more secluded Lake Martignano, both of volcanic origin.

The route

The start is set on the Anguillara lakefront, in the Piazza del Molo area, from where runners head out onto the trails, cart tracks, and gravel roads of the Bracciano-Martignano Regional Natural Park. The competitive course covers a distance that has historically fluctuated between 17 and 22 kilometres, with a moderate elevation gain (around 400 metres) that makes the race challenging yet accessible to those new to trail running. The terrain alternates between packed earth, dirt tracks, and short paved sections, winding through woods, countryside, and scenic viewpoints overlooking the two lakes.

Running and trekking: two souls

The event pairs the competitive race with a non-competitive walk of a shorter distance, designed for hikers, families, and enthusiasts who prefer to experience the route at a trekking pace. This dual format, combined with a deliberately limited number of participants, allows for a blend of competitive spirit and slow discovery of the natural environment, highlighting the landscape attractions of the Sabatini district.

Anguillara Sabazia and the lake district

The Municipality of Anguillara Sabazia is one of the most charming villages in the Sabatini lake district, with its historic centre stretching out towards Lake Bracciano. Running or walking during the Trail dei due Laghi means traversing a landscape where nature, history, and agricultural tradition coexist, just a few kilometres from Rome. The nearby Lake Martignano, accessible only on foot or by bicycle and free of settlements along its shores, offers one of the most pristine corners of Lazio.

A late autumn tradition

Founded in the late 2000s, the event reached its seventeenth edition in 2025, becoming a classic on the Lazio trail calendar between late November and December. Each year, it gathers hundreds of runners and hikers from Rome and the rest of the region for a day that combines competition, socialising, and a love for the environment.
