The beating heart of the Viareggio Carnival, featuring masks, music, and seafood kitchens in the Darsena district
In the seafaring heart of Viareggio, in the province of Lucca, Tuscany, the Baccanale del CarnevalDarsena is the festival that transforms the Darsena district into an open-air stage every year. While the giant papier-mรขchรฉ floats of the famous Viareggio Carnival parade along the Viali a Mare, here, "beyond the pier" along Via Coppino and the streets of the shipyard district, the most authentic and popular version of the celebration takes place: five nights of music, masks, dancing, and great food, organized by the CarnevalDarsena Association with the dedication of about two hundred volunteers.
The Baccanale consists of five evenings of festivities spanning from the final weekend of Carnival through Shrove Tuesday. It all begins with the flag-raising ceremony and a grand parade of over thirty masked groups marching down Via Coppino, accompanied by choirs, music, and irony. Local musical acts and a roving street band perform on stages scattered along the circuit, while Viareggio Carnival DJs keep the energy high between performances. Over one hundred thousand revelers are estimated to attend over the five days.
The gastronomic heart of the event is the volunteer-run kitchens, considered among the largest seafood kitchens in Italy. The signature dish is the risottino, affectionately called a "UNESCO heritage" for its tradition and popularity: its aroma fills the evenings and warms participants before the show. Numerous stands and social gatherings revolve around the kitchens, in the true spirit of a neighborhood festival.
The CarnevalDarsena has its own symbols and rituals: the Octopus (Polpo) is the district's mascot, to the point that festival areas bear names like Palapolpo, and one of the most anticipated events is the culinary talent show "La Prova del polpo". There is no shortage of family-oriented moments, such as the Carnevalpolpettino with miniature floats and free games for children, as well as the awards ceremonies for the Darsena's historic competitions.
The Baccanale is a free-admission event, deeply rooted in the identity of the Darsena district and the tradition of the Municipality of Viareggio. It is a testament to how Carnival, beyond the spectacle of the allegorical floats, can also thrive in its most intimate, neighborhood dimension, built on volunteerism, popular music, and conviviality.
The 2026 edition confirmed the formula of the five "Great Nights of Baccanale" along Via Coppino, with about two hundred volunteers at work and over one hundred thousand revelers expected. Five stages hosted local live music, while the street band animated the circuit in a roving format. Special events included the culinary talent show "La Prova del polpo" and the charity lunch "Burlapranzo" at the Palapolpo, alongside family-friendly moments and the awards ceremonies for the district's historic competitions.
