The historic center of Borgo a Mozzano transforms into a spring garden
The Azalea Flower Market and Exhibition is one of the most beloved spring events in the province of Lucca. Every year in mid-April, the historic center of Borgo a Mozzano, in the heart of the Mediavalle del Serchio, transforms into a sprawling garden: streets and squares are adorned with colors thanks to florist stalls, flowerbeds, and floral arrangements that decorate the town. The azalea, the event's signature flower, takes center stage during a weekend where nature, tradition, and community intertwine.
The heart of the exhibition is floriculture: along Via Roma and in the town squares, florist stalls line up with seasonal plants, azaleas, perennials, garden furniture, and gardening supplies. Over the years, the number of exhibitors has grown significantly, a sign of the vitality of an event that attracts enthusiasts and curious visitors from all over Tuscany. In addition to the stalls, the event features installations and gardens open for visits in evocative locations, such as the Convent of San Francesco and the gardens of the Town Hall.
Alongside the flowers, the Azalea Flower Market and Exhibition offers a rich cultural program. Among the most characteristic offerings are guided tours of the historic center, the churches, and the Convent of San Francesco, as well as the opening of the Museum of Memory with visits to the bunkers of the Gothic Line, the defensive line from the Second World War that crossed this stretch of the valley. There are also thematic exhibitions, such as the one dedicated to the "chestnut culture," displays of vintage radios, and educational paths curated by local schools.
Throughout the weekend, the town is enlivened by the music of local marching bands (Corsagna, Valdottavo, and the local Philharmonic) and by performances and demonstrations. Ample space is dedicated to children, with playgrounds, workshops, and recreational activities. The gastronomic side completes the offering with refreshment points, tastings of local Mediavalle products, and street food options scattered throughout the center. The Azalea Flower Market and Exhibition is organized by the Municipality of Borgo a Mozzano with the support of the Tuscany Region, the Province of Lucca, and the Union of Municipalities of the Mediavalle del Serchio.
Visiting the Azalea festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover Borgo a Mozzano, famous for the evocative Ponte della Maddalena, better known as the Devil's Bridge, a symbol of the Lucca area. A weekend of flowers, history, and flavors, ideal for a spring trip to one of the most fascinating villages in northern Tuscany.
The 2026 edition of the Azalea Flower Market and Exhibition enlivened Borgo a Mozzano throughout the weekend of April 18 and 19, focusing on the theme of cooperation and synergy between institutions and territories. The winning formula that intertwines floriculture, culture, and tradition in the historic center of the Mediavalle del Serchio village was confirmed.
The event takes place over a weekend in mid-April, with continuous hours from 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM. The inauguration is generally on Saturday morning.
