Chestnuts, new wine, and rustic cuisine in the historic center of Vallo di Diano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
When the woods surrounding Vallo di Diano turn shades of red and ochre, the historic center of Atena Lucana opens its alleys to the Autumn Festival. It is one of those village celebrations that needs no grand stages: the braziers lit on street corners, the aroma of roasting chestnuts, and tables set before doorways are enough to transform the village into one large gathering place. The event celebrates seasonal staples and the ancient agricultural traditions of this corner of the Salerno province, in Campania, during a time of year when the Vallo di Diano countryside is at its most beautiful.
The undisputed stars are the chestnuts, served both roasted and boiled according to local custom, and the new wine, which traditionally accompanies local baked goods in the weeks following the harvest. These two symbols anchor a culinary journey that winds through the historic center, with food stalls set up along the village streets.
Alongside the culinary offerings, the Autumn Festival hosts a market of local produce and handicrafts that fills the village squares. It is the perfect opportunity to buy preserves, cheeses, cured meats, honey, and dried fruit directly from the producers, as well as to observe the small-scale crafts that still survive in the villages of Vallo di Diano. Many visitors arrive from neighboring towns specifically to stock up on seasonal products before winter.
The soundtrack of the day is provided by live folk music and roaming performers who move from square to square, engaging the crowd continuously. As evening falls, the autumn bonfires are lit, creating the most folkloric atmosphere of the festival: it is the moment when the village, which empties out during the summer, rediscovers its sense of community.
A specific area is dedicated to children, with traditional games and entertainment: a simple way to pass on the habits of a rural civilization that, until a few generations ago, marked autumn with the chestnut harvest, grape pressing, and the preparation of winter supplies. The format makes the event perfect for a half-day family outing.
The municipality of Atena Lucana stands at an altitude of about 640 meters on a hill overlooking Vallo di Diano. It is one of the oldest settlements in the area: it preserves sections of megalithic walls dating back to the Lucanian age, was a Roman municipium, and still houses the Church of San Nicola, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the ruins of the castle, and the Serrone archaeological site. Walking through the historic center during the festival means traversing centuries of history with a paper cone of roasted chestnuts in hand.
The Autumn Festival is held in the historic center of Atena Lucana (province of Salerno, Campania), traditionally in the month of October. The 2025 edition took place on Monday, October 20th, starting at 5:00 PM. For 2026, the date has not yet been made public: as with many autumn festivals in small towns, the calendar is announced just a few weeks in advance through the municipality's channels and local associations.
As of the end of July 2026, the date for the new Autumn Festival in Atena Lucana has not yet been announced. This is quite normal for an autumn event in a small town in Vallo di Diano: the calendar depends on the ripening of the chestnuts and the availability of the new wine, and is usually finalized during September.
While waiting for the official announcement, the reference remains the previous edition, which took place in the historic center of the village with a market for local produce and handicrafts, food stalls along the alleys, live folk music, bonfires, and a children's play area. Those wishing to plan their visit can follow the updates from the Municipality of Atena Lucana, in the province of Salerno, where notices regarding local events are published.
Atena Lucana is located in Vallo di Diano, at the southeastern end of the province of Salerno. The Atena Lucana exit on the A2 Autostrada del Mediterraneo (Salerno-Reggio Calabria) is just a few minutes from the village, and dedicated parking is provided for the festival. The historic village is on high ground, while the hamlet of Atena Lucana Scalo is located in the valley: to reach the historic center, you must drive up the municipal road.
Access to the streets of the historic center is free. Tastings are available at the food stalls and market stands; prices have not been officially released.
The festival route winds through sloping alleys and ancient paving: it is best to wear comfortable shoes. In October, at over 600 meters above sea level, the evenings can be chilly, so it is advisable to bring a jacket. We recommend arriving early to find parking near the village.
