The festival of legality and rights in Bazzano di Valsamoggia
AUT AUT – Culture Against the Mafia is a regional event born in 2012 in Bazzano, in the Municipality of Valsamoggia, in the province of Bologna (Emilia-Romagna). The festival promotes a culture of legality, the fight against the mafia, respect for institutions and social rules, particularly targeting young people. Over the years, its scope has expanded to embrace the culture of rights in all its nuances, social justice, historical memory, and civic education.
The event has been coordinated from the beginning by the Fondazione Rocca dei Bentivoglio and, since 2019, operates through the CLICA – Center for Legality, Inclusion, and Active Citizenship of Valsamoggia. The festival relies on a vast network of partners: the Municipality of Valsamoggia, Libera Bologna, Avviso Pubblico, Coop Alleanza 3.0, ANPI, local Pro Loco associations, and schools. The activities are part of the Emilia-Romagna regional law on the promotion of legality and responsible citizenship.
AUT AUT alternates moments of reflection and celebration: meetings and debates with magistrates, journalists, scholars, and witnesses; screenings of documentaries and video investigations; live concerts with local bands and national guests. The heart of the event is Piazza Garibaldi in Bazzano, while meetings and screenings are often held at the evocative Rocca dei Bentivoglio. Each edition is dedicated to a specific theme, chosen to shed light on a chapter of Italian and international civil history or current events.
Designed primarily for younger generations, the festival is a space for active participation where the Youth Council and schools play a leading role. Admission to all events is free, confirming the popular and inclusive nature of the event, which has enlivened the spring of Valsamoggia for over ten years.
The 2026 edition, titled "In the square with Giulio Regeni – International Law Scenarios," took place on Saturday, May 9, and Sunday, May 10, in Piazza Garibaldi in Bazzano. The festival commemorated Giulio Regeni on the tenth anniversary of his abduction and death in Egypt, making human rights and international law the common thread of concerts, debates, and performances, all with free admission.
The central moment of the edition was the naming of CLICA – Center for Legality, Inclusion, and Active Citizenship after Giulio Regeni, with a video link to his parents. The meetings addressed the Balkan route, the Iranian issue, and the present and future of Israel and Palestine, interspersed with live music. In case of rain, meetings were held in the Sala dei Giganti of the Rocca dei Bentivoglio.
The heart of the festival is Piazza Garibaldi in Bazzano, a district of the Municipality of Valsamoggia (BO). Meetings and screenings are also held at the Rocca dei Bentivoglio (Sala dei Giganti), which serves as an indoor venue in case of rain.
Bazzano is located along the Via Bazzanese (SP569), about 25 km from Bologna. It can be reached by car from the A1 motorway (Valsamoggia exit) and by intercity public transport from the regional capital.
Admission to all events is free.
