The Aspra Patronal Festival is the most significant religious and popular event in the picturesque seaside village of Aspra, the only district of the Municipality of Bagheria, overlooking the Gulf of Palermo in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. For about ten days in September, the entire fishing village gathers around its patron saint, Maria Santissima Addolorata, venerated in the parish church dedicated to her, which also houses precious local artworks.
The festival stems from the devotion of the maritime community and still retains a strong sense of identity today. The highlight is the solemn procession of the statue of the Addolorata, which winds through the village streets accompanied by a brass band, while in the preceding days, the statue is carried in a sea procession on fishing boats, in one of the most evocative rituals of the Palermo coastline.
Alongside the religious celebrations, the festival showcases the ancient traditions of the Aspra seafaring community:
A village with ancient fishing traditions, famous for its anchovies and sunsets over the gulf, Aspra finds its peak of the year in its patronal festival. The event attracts not only the village residents but also people from Bagheria and numerous visitors who crowd the seafront in September. It is organized by the Maria SS. Addolorata Parish together with the Confraternity and with the support of the Municipality of Bagheria.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced; the festival traditionally takes place in the first half of September, around the feast day of the Addolorata on September 15th.
