Two days of harvesting, cooking, and music in the village of Lucanian magic
At 665 meters above sea level in the Sinni Valley, overlooking the Pollino National Park, Colobraro is one of the most fascinating and talked-about villages in Basilicata. Here, in early May, the Asparagus festival celebrates one of the most typical gifts of Lucanian spring: the wild asparagus, slender and slightly bitter, which grows spontaneously along the paths and fields around the village.
The event unfolds over two days with distinct characters. Saturday is dedicated to the evening festival, with stalls offering asparagus-based dishes and Lucanian specialties; Sunday, on the other hand, favors direct engagement with the territory, with harvesting excursions and themed lunches.
Colobraro has always carried the reputation of being "that village" associated with bad luck and Lucanian superstition: a notoriety that the community has skillfully transformed into identity and tourist narrative. Experiencing Asparagus also means immersing yourself in this particular atmosphere, made of anthropology, legends, and traditions that in Colobraro are not mere surface folklore but living memory.
The fixed menus based on asparagus, offered by participating restaurants, showcase an essential and generous peasant cuisine. Street artists, live concerts, and the harvesting walk that leads visitors to identify and pick asparagus directly in the fields revolve around food: a small ritual that inextricably links the product to its landscape.
Promoted by the Municipality of Colobraro as part of the territory enhancement programs for the Senises area, Asparagus is a young but rapidly growing event, designed to showcase an authentic corner of the Matera region outside the peak tourist season.
The second edition of Asparagus is confirmed for May 2 and 3, 2026 in Colobraro. Two days dedicated to wild asparagus, featuring gastronomy, nature, and entertainment, in the Matera village overlooking the Pollino National Park.
Getting there: Colobraro is reachable by car via the SS 653 della Valle del Sinni; the nearest airports are in the Policoro-Tursi area.
Dining: fixed asparagus menu for 25 euros at participating restaurants (appetizer, first course, second course, and a glass of wine); food stalls along the festival route.
Excursion: the guided harvesting on Sunday morning requires trekking shoes and comfortable clothing.
