Petal carpets along Corso dei Mille for the solemnity of Corpus Domini
The Artistic Flower Festival of Marineo is one of the most evocative religious and artistic events in Sicily, tied to the solemnity of Corpus Domini. It takes place in Marineo, a village in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, and represents a one-of-a-kind event in the entire Palermitan province. For a few days, Corso dei Mille, the main artery of the historic center, turns into an extraordinary open-air gallery, covered for over 150 meters by dozens of floral tableaux.
The event is born and developed around the community's Eucharistic devotion. The creation of the flower carpets follows three phases: gathering the flowers, sketching the designs on the asphalt, and the patient composition of the colored petals. Groups of 'infioratori' (flower artists), formed by families, associations, and local volunteers, bring to life over thirty figurative tableaux, often inspired by sacred themes, nature, and local traditions. It is an ephemeral collective work, destined to live for only a few hours: on Sunday, the compositions are walked upon by the procession, leaving only photographs as a testament.
The heart of the event is the Notte dell'Infiorata: during the night hours, master flower artists work tirelessly until dawn to complete the petal carpets. Throughout the night, the town squares come alive with performances, music, flag-wavers, and convivial moments, while visitors stroll among the colors and scents. From the early hours of the morning, it is possible to admire the entire display, accompanied by the sound of the 'tammurinara' (traditional drummers) and the marching band parading through the streets of the center.
The celebration extends over the octave, the 'ottavario di lu Signuri'. Sunday is the climax, with the alborata (morning awakening), the band's music, and the solemn Eucharistic procession that brings together all the local confraternities and hundreds of the faithful. Along the route, families display embroidered blankets on their balconies and throw flower petals as the consecrated Host passes, crossing the floral carpets of Corso dei Mille.
The Flower Festival is organized and managed with great dedication by the Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament, which enriches the event every year with new initiatives, including the Children's Flower Festival, dedicated to the little ones. Each edition attracts thousands of visitors to Marineo, confirming its status as a landmark for religious and cultural tourism in inland Sicily.
Nestled at the foot of the Rocca in the Palermitan hinterland, Marineo is a village rich in history and traditions. Visiting the Flower Festival is also an opportunity to discover the 16th-century castle, the churches of the historic center, and genuine Sicilian hospitality, during a time of year when the town experiences its most heartfelt celebration.
The 2026 edition of the Artistic Flower Festival of Marineo confirmed the customary appointment with the solemnity of Corpus Domini. The Notte dell'Infiorata was held on the night of Saturday, June 6, 2026, when volunteers and master flower artists worked until dawn to compose the petal tableaux along Corso dei Mille. The Eucharistic procession crossed the floral compositions on Sunday, June 7, 2026.
The installation of the carpets, extending for over 150 meters, transformed the historic center into an open-air museum, animated by music, shows, and the Children's Flower Festival. The complete details of the themes of the tableaux and the evening program are curated year by year by the Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament.
Marineo is located about 35 km from Palermo. By car: from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, take the Villabate exit, then follow the SS121 and provincial road signs for Marineo. By train/bus: from Palermo Centrale station, there are bus connections to the towns in the Palermitan hinterland.
The event takes place on the occasion of Corpus Domini, between late May and early June. The 'Notte dell'Infiorata' and the procession are held on the final weekend.
The event takes place along Corso dei Mille and is free and open to the public. We recommend arriving on the evening of the 'Notte dell'Infiorata' to witness the creation of the tableaux and the following morning to admire them completed before the procession. Comfortable shoes and a camera are essential.
