The Art Nouveau week in the historic center of Penne
Art Nouveau Week is an international event held every July that celebrates the Art Nouveau style and the Belle Époque in over three hundred cities worldwide. Conceived and promoted by the Italia Liberty Association, and curated by art historian Andrea Speziali, the 2026 edition crosses the Abruzzo region with a rich program of itineraries, guided tours, and lectures. Among the nine Abruzzo cities involved is Penne, an elegant town in the province of Pescara known for its characteristic brick urban layout.
The Penne stop features a guided walk titled "From shop windows to decorations", designed to reveal a discreet yet fascinating side of Art Nouveau. In Penne, modernism does not manifest in grand monumental palaces, but rather in the intimate scale of workshops, storefronts, and shop windows that become scenes of communication: a perfumery on Corso Emilio Alessandrini, a residential building on Via Dante, signs, balconies, frames, and decorative floral paintings all tell the story of the arrival of modernity in the small towns of the hinterland.
The itinerary interprets Penne's Art Nouveau as applied art, artistic craftsmanship, urban graphics, and commercial taste, in an intertwining of tradition and modernity. The visit, led by a licensed tour guide, accompanies participants through the streets of the historic center in search of those often-overlooked details that bear witness to the modernist season of the early twentieth century, when even the smaller centers of the Adriatic Abruzzo were reached by the new floral language.
The Penne stop is part of the regional Art Nouveau Week program, which in 2026 also involves Atri, Giulianova, Guardiagrele, Lanciano, L'Aquila, Pescara, Sulmona, and Teramo. Each city offers an itinerary dedicated to its own Art Nouveau heritage, from the villas of the Adriatic coast to the bourgeois palaces of the historic centers, composing a mosaic that reflects the cultural vibrancy of Abruzzo between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The eighth edition of Art Nouveau Week brings the international Art Nouveau festival to Penne, in the province of Pescara, for the first time. The event, scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 5:00 PM, consists of a guided walk titled "From shop windows to decorations", led by licensed tour guide Rita Pezzella.
The itinerary highlights the few but significant examples of floral taste in the city: from the perfumery on Corso Emilio Alessandrini to the residential building at 17 Via Dante, among shop windows, balconies, frames, and painted decorations. The route interprets Penne's modernism as art applied to commerce and craftsmanship, a testament to the arrival of the Belle Époque in the towns of the Abruzzo hinterland.
