The international street theatre festival that turns the medieval village of Campiglia Marittima into an open-air stage
In the heart of the Val di Cornia, in the Province of Livorno, the small town of Campiglia Marittimaโlisted among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italyโhosts one of Tuscany's most beloved street theatre events every summer: ApritiBorgo - ABC Festival. For five midsummer nights, the entire medieval historic centre becomes a vast open-air theatre, where alleys, squares, stairways, and hidden nooks serve as unique stages.
Organised by Terzostudio - Progetti per lo spettacolo in collaboration with the Municipality of Campiglia Marittima, the festival is an international theatrical showcase that attracts thousands of spectators and numerous companies from across Italy and abroad every year.
The ApritiBorgo programme weaves together diverse genres and languages: street theatre and storytelling, contemporary circus and clowning, music and light theatre, dance, opera, puppetry, and grand illusions. Each evening, the audience is invited to wander through the village, following a path of performances, surprises, and installations, discovering a new artistic act at every turn.
The festival is unique in that it has no single main stage: performances take place simultaneously in various spots throughout the historic centre, allowing spectators to create their own itinerary through the squares and alleys of Campiglia. In recent years, the evocative Rocca (fortress) that overlooks the village has also been added to the festival map, further enriching the experience.
Born and developed throughout the 2000s, ApritiBorgo has become a benchmark for street theatre in Tuscany and a key stop on the national live performance circuit. Following a three-year project dedicated to the theme of "Metamorphosis," the festival has continued its journey with new themes that serve as a common thread for each edition.
For the public, ApritiBorgo is also an opportunity to discover Campiglia Marittima and the Val di Cornia: a territory of historic villages, rolling hills, archaeological parks, and the sea, just a few kilometres from the Etruscan Coast.
ApritiBorgo is an evening event: as the sun sets, the village lights up with music and applause, giving Campiglia Marittima a unique atmosphere in the heart of the Tuscan summer.
The 2026 edition of ApritiBorgo - ABC Festival celebrates a major milestone: the 20th edition of the international street theatre festival of Campiglia Marittima. The event is confirmed from 11 to 15 August 2026, with five evenings that will bring the entire medieval historic centre to life.
Once again this year, the village will turn into a performance trail featuring street theatre, contemporary circus, clowning, music, and puppetry, with Italian and international companies and the Rocca as one of the most evocative settings. The announced theme is "The Hidden City / Contaminations".
At the moment, the detailed programme for the 2026 edition is being finalised by the organisers.
The detailed programme for the 2026 edition (companies, performances, times, and locations) has not yet been published; the organisers describe the line-up as "in progress". It will be announced in the weeks leading up to the festival on the official channels of Terzostudio and the Municipality of Campiglia Marittima.
Based on recent editions, one can expect five evenings with numerous performances each night, distributed across the squares, alleys, and the Rocca of the village, featuring street theatre, contemporary circus, clowning, music, dance, puppetry, and magic. This page will be updated with the line-up, times, and locations as soon as the official programme is available.
