The historic Tora e Piccilli fair returns to life with food and wine stalls, excursions, and a tribute to the Liberation
The April 25th Fair is one of the most deep-rooted traditions of Tora e Piccilli, a town of just over seven hundred inhabitants in the province of Caserta, Campania, situated at an altitude of 343 meters on the slopes of the extinct Roccamonfina volcanic complex. Heir to the ancient Castrum Thorae fair, the event had been suspended for years. In 2026, the municipal administration led by Mayor Vincenzo D'Agostino reopened it, including it in the A Journey Through History and Tradition initiative promoted by the Municipality together with Federitaly: the fair has thus returned to being, as noted by the local press, a concrete symbol of rebirth and the enhancement of local traditions.
The popular heart of the day beats in Piazza Umberto I, in the center of Tora, where the fair opens at 10:00 AM. It is the moment when the village fills with stalls, scents, and voices, with that genuine atmosphere of participation that is a virtue of small towns. The program in the square includes:
Alongside the fair, the courtyard of the ancient Falco family palace hosts the conference that gives the entire initiative its name. The theme is the sustainable development of the inland areas of Campania: a discussion between administrators, park authorities, and the agricultural sector on how to value territories rich in resources, traditions, culture, and quality small and medium-sized enterprises, while improving connections. It was precisely from this discussion that the 2026 proposal for the General States of Tourism was born, conceived as a new model for regional tourism development.
Ample space is reserved for the town's signature products. The twinning between Olio Castrum Thorae and the Venafrum oil from nearby Molise, along with the presentation of Terre di Tora wines, tells the story of a territory that thrives on olive groves, vineyards, and biodiversity. The day also features representatives of local farms and the Protection Consortium of the Melannurca Campana PGI, demonstrating that a short supply chain here is not just a slogan, but the norm.
Tora e Piccilli is no ordinary village: its territory is home to the famous Ciampate del Diavolo, the footprints left by prehistoric humans on the lava flow of the Roccamonfina volcano, which later solidified into rock. The day's guided excursions allow visitors to reach these sites and discover, along the way, the medieval tower, the churches of San Giovanni Apostolo and San Simeone, and the convent of Sant'Antonio, set in an enchanting landscape of woods and terraces.
The fair falls on the day of the Liberation Day, and memory is not a secondary detail. During the Nazi persecution, the community of Tora e Piccilli protected dozens of Jewish people, risking their own lives: an episode that the provincial ANPI of Caserta publicly commemorated during the event. The day thus combines popular celebration, civic commitment, and promotion of the territory.
Those arriving in Tora e Piccilli on April 25th will find an authentic village fair, free from artifice: just a few kilometers from the Regional Park of the Volcanic Area of Roccamonfina and Foce Garigliano, a compact historic center, and products tasted directly from the hands of those who produce them. It is the ideal occasion for a day trip in the Alto Casertano, close to Teano, Sessa Aurunca, and the border with Molise.
The 2026 edition, scheduled for Saturday, April 25th, marked the reopening of the historic Tora e Piccilli fair after years of inactivity. The event was divided into two hubs: the popular fair in Piazza Umberto I, open from 10:00 AM, and the conference in the courtyard of Palazzo Falco, which began at 10:30 AM.
The day was promoted by the Municipality of Tora e Piccilli and the administration led by Mayor Vincenzo D'Agostino, in collaboration with Federitaly, with organization curated by Deputy Mayor Simona Fracasso. The discussion also led to the proposal of the General States of Tourism for the inland areas of Campania.
Ample space was dedicated to local excellence: the twinning between Olio Castrum Thorae and Venafrum oil, the presentation of Terre di Tora wines, and the stories of local farms. There was no shortage of moments dedicated to the memory of the Liberation, with the participation of the provincial ANPI of Caserta.
Moderated by Domenico Letizia, journalist.
Guest of the day: Nicola Caputo, Councilor delegated to Export of Made in Italy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Francesco Madonna, President of the ANPI of the province of Caserta, was also present.
The fair is held in Piazza Umberto I, in the center of Tora, the main hamlet of the Municipality of Tora e Piccilli (CE). The conference takes place in the courtyard of Palazzo Falco, a few steps from the square.
