About Montana Crest 100 Miles

A new extreme challenge for endurance lovers: the Montana Crest 100 Miles crosses the entire Apennine ridge between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany, from Corniglio (Parma) to Lizzano in Belvedere (Bologna). Approximately 155 km and 8,500 meters of positive elevation gain to be covered in a single stage, along trails, ridges, and forest roads through national and regional parks. A very tough test reserved for the most prepared ultratrailers, valid for the IUTA Ultra XL Italian Championship.

A 155-kilometer Apennine crossing

The Montana Crest 100 Miles is the new mountain ultramarathon that, in June 2026, debuts on the long ridge of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Organized by A.S.D. Lupi d'Appennino – the Corniglio association already known for the historic The Abbot's Way – the race offers a course of approximately 155 km with 8,500 meters of positive elevation gain, to be tackled autonomously and in a single stage. The start is set from Corniglio, in the Province of Parma, and the finish in Lizzano in Belvedere, in the Province of Bologna, after touching some of the most scenic passes of the watershed.

The route, almost entirely off-road

The course develops almost entirely on trails and off-road, along single tracks, Apennine ridges, and forest roads, crossing four protected areas between national and regional parks. It is a "ridge" route in the truest sense of the term, requiring experience, navigation skills (GPS is mandatory), and solid long-distance preparation.

  • Prato Spilla — km 38
  • Cerreto Laghi — km 58
  • Passo Pradarena — km 68
  • Passo delle Radici — km 92
  • Lago Santo Modenese — km 107
  • Passo dell'Abetone — km 117
  • Le Polle locality (ski slopes) — km 137
  • Lizzano in Belvedere — finish — km 155

A test for a few

The Montana Crest is not a race for everyone: the number of bibs is limited and registration requires a race curriculum of at least 90 km in recent years. Along the route, competitors will find numerous food and drink aid stations, while personal assistance with support vehicles is provided at permitted points. The maximum time to complete the entire crossing is 46 hours.

Competitive value

The first edition is included in the national IUTA (Italian UltraMarathon and Trail Association) calendar and is valid as a race for the 15th IUTA UltraTrail Grand Prix and as the 2026 IUTA Italian Championship for the Ultra XL category. For the territory of the upper Parma Apennines and Emilia-Romagna, the event represents a significant sporting showcase, capable of attracting ultratrailers from all over Italy to one of the most fascinating mountain landscapes in the region.
