The 155 km ultratrail along the ridge of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, from Corniglio to Lizzano in Belvedere
The Montana Crest 100 Miles is the new mountain ultramarathon that, in June 2026, debuts on the long ridge of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Organized by A.S.D. Lupi d'Appennino – the Corniglio association already known for the historic The Abbot's Way – the race offers a course of approximately 155 km with 8,500 meters of positive elevation gain, to be tackled autonomously and in a single stage. The start is set from Corniglio, in the Province of Parma, and the finish in Lizzano in Belvedere, in the Province of Bologna, after touching some of the most scenic passes of the watershed.
The course develops almost entirely on trails and off-road, along single tracks, Apennine ridges, and forest roads, crossing four protected areas between national and regional parks. It is a "ridge" route in the truest sense of the term, requiring experience, navigation skills (GPS is mandatory), and solid long-distance preparation.
The Montana Crest is not a race for everyone: the number of bibs is limited and registration requires a race curriculum of at least 90 km in recent years. Along the route, competitors will find numerous food and drink aid stations, while personal assistance with support vehicles is provided at permitted points. The maximum time to complete the entire crossing is 46 hours.
The first edition is included in the national IUTA (Italian UltraMarathon and Trail Association) calendar and is valid as a race for the 15th IUTA UltraTrail Grand Prix and as the 2026 IUTA Italian Championship for the Ultra XL category. For the territory of the upper Parma Apennines and Emilia-Romagna, the event represents a significant sporting showcase, capable of attracting ultratrailers from all over Italy to one of the most fascinating mountain landscapes in the region.
The first edition of the Montana Crest 100 Miles takes place from June 12 to 14, 2026, with the start on Friday the 12th at 6:00 AM from Corniglio (PR) and the finish in Lizzano in Belvedere (BO). The course measures approximately 155 km for 8,500 m of positive elevation gain, to be completed in a single stage within a maximum of 46 hours.

Corniglio is located in the upper Val Parma, in the Parma Apennines. By car from Parma, take the SS665 "Massese" south for about 45 km. The nearest train station is Parma, connected to the national network; from there, continue by car or public bus towards the mountains.
Bib collection and mandatory gear check take place in Corniglio on Thursday, June 11, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and on Friday, June 12, from 5:00 AM to 5:40 AM. The start is at 6:00 AM from Corniglio. A Pasta Party is scheduled for Thursday evening in Piazza del Castello.
Mandatory gear and GPS are essential. Given the altitude and the Apennine passes, pack clothing for variable weather conditions, even in June. At the finish in Lizzano in Belvedere, there will be a final refreshment, showers, and changing facilities.
