Nativity, tradition, and ancient flavors in the medieval village of Terravecchia
During the Christmas season, the Terravecchia district, the medieval core of Vicari in the province of Palermo, comes alive with the "Antichi Sapori" Living Nativity. Along the narrow stone alleys, at the foot of the majestic Norman castle commissioned by Count Roger on Mount Sant'Angelo, dozens of performers in period costumes bring the Nativity to life and reconstruct the daily existence of a traditional Sicilian village.
Along the route, visitors encounter ancient crafts and scenes of rural life: lit hearths, artisans at work, and the sounds and carols of Christmas tradition. The atmosphere is warm and intimate, typical of the small towns in the Val di Mazzara hinterland, where religious re-enactment blends with the memory of local Vicari roots.
The heart of the event is the tasting of typical local products, from which the event takes its name. Along the path, visitors can sample specialties of the local peasant cuisine, prepared with ingredients from the surrounding countryside:
Vicari stands at an altitude of about 700 meters on Mount Sant'Angelo and is dominated by the castle, described by the Arab geographer Al-Idrisi in the "Book of Roger" as "an imposing castle and an impregnable fortress." Visiting the living nativity is also an opportunity to discover one of the most characteristic villages in the Palermo hinterland, with its churches, remnants of the city walls, and the alleys of the Terravecchia district.
The event is organized by the San Giorgio Martire Parish together with the Vicari community and generally takes place between late December and Epiphany, during the evening hours. Access to the village is free; tastings take place along the route set up through the streets of Terravecchia.
For the 2025/2026 Christmas edition, the "Antichi Sapori" Living Nativity in Vicari opened the doors of the Terravecchia district for two evenings: December 28, 2025, and January 6, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
At the foot of the Norman castle, performers in period costumes brought the Nativity scenes to life and reconstructed the crafts and rural life of the past. Along the route, visitors sampled traditional specialties: dry sausage with wild fennel, ricotta and cheeses, durum wheat pasta, legume soups, boiled meats with wild herbs, dried figs, honey, and spiced mulled wine.
Opening days: December 28, 2025, and January 6, 2026.
Time: from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
Location: Terravecchia district, medieval village at the foot of the Castle of Vicari.
Vicari is located in the hinterland of the province of Palermo, along the SS121 Palermo-Agrigento road. By car, it can be reached in about an hour from Palermo by taking the Vicari/Manganaro exit. The performance takes place in the Terravecchia district, at the foot of the castle: it is recommended to park in the lower part of the town and walk up towards the medieval village.
The living nativity is held during the Christmas period, generally between late December and January 6th (Epiphany), in the evening.
Wear comfortable shoes for the stone alleys of the village and warm clothing, given the altitude and the evening hours. Tastings of typical products are an integral part of the experience.
