About Terra Ionica Carnival

The ANSPI Terra Ionica Carnival is a traveling festival promoted by the ANSPI San Giuseppe dal Cuore Castissimo oratory and club. Every February, it brings floats, masks, music, and dancing to three towns in the province of Taranto: Monteiasi, San Giorgio Ionico, and Monteparano. An event designed for families, focused on inclusion, community, and the identity of the Ionian territory.

The Carnival of the three Ionian towns

The ANSPI Terra Ionica Carnival is one of the most heartfelt carnival celebrations in the Taranto hinterland. Born from the initiative of the ANSPI San Giuseppe dal Cuore Castissimo oratory and club, the event follows an unusual and generous format: it does not stay in one town square but becomes itinerant, bringing the festivities to three neighboring municipalities in the province of Taranto, Puglia. Over a few weeks in mid-February, the procession of floats, masks, and costumed groups travels through Monteiasi, San Giorgio Ionico, and Monteparano, uniting the communities in one grand parade.

A festival dedicated to inclusion

What sets this Carnival apart is not just the parade of floats, but the spirit that fuels it. Each edition revolves around a powerful theme: the 2026 edition, titled The Land of Toys, was inspired by the short film The Butterfly Circus, a story that celebrates inner rebirth, resilience, and the ability to turn one's limitations into strengths. The message is that of a Carnival for everyone: the festival involves dance schools, local associations, and groups dedicated to the inclusion of young people with disabilities, such as the Diversamente Giovani association of San Giorgio Ionico.

Floats, masks, music, and dance

The days begin in the afternoon, transforming the centers of the three towns into a riot of color. Alongside the allegorical floats, masked groups, entertainers, and dancers parade through the streets: the Mi Sueno Latino dance school brings Latin rhythms and choreography to the streets, while music, confetti, and masks accompany families and children along the entire route. There is no shortage of fun and recreational moments designed for the little ones, making the event an authentic, free, and open-to-all village festival.

A project for the Ionian territory

With its increasingly popular editions, the Terra Ionica Carnival has become a defining event for Monteiasi and the entire Ionian area in the province of Taranto. The organizers' stated goal is to offer moments of lightheartedness, leisure, and play, while also promoting sharing and a sense of belonging among municipalities that choose to celebrate together. It is the oratory's Carnival that becomes the Carnival of an entire territory.

Terra Ionica Carnival — edition 2026

The fourth edition of the ANSPI Terra Ionica Carnival, titled The Land of Toys, took place in February 2026 across three municipalities: Monteiasi, San Giorgio Ionico, and Monteparano. The theme was inspired by the short film The Butterfly Circus, featuring floats, masks, music, and dance, with a strong message of inclusion.
