About Culture Festival

The Culture Festival is the major annual event series organized by Pro Loco Angri: twelve months of literary meetings, concerts, exhibitions, theater, film screenings, and evenings dedicated to local history, held under the patronage of the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Angri. From Castello Doria to the Casa del Cittadino, the city in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area becomes a year-round hub for art, music, literature, and folk traditions. All events are free of charge, subject to availability.

A festival that lasts twelve months

The Culture Festival is not just a few days of events: it is a series that spans twelve months, from autumn to the following summer. Launched by Pro Loco Angri in June 2025, it aims to transform the city into a reference point for art, literature, music, and local traditions. The project was created with the patronage of the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Angri and benefits from the collaboration of young volunteers from the Universal Civil Service, who work alongside the association's members to organize the events.

Angri, in the Province of Salerno, is one of the most populous towns in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area: a lowland city nestled between Mount Vesuvius and the Lattari Mountains, where community life is vibrant and collective memory remains a shared heritage. The Culture Festival focuses precisely on this: not just big names, but the town's history, its families, home photographs, and the songs everyone knows.

Program sections

The calendar is intentionally multidisciplinary and is structured into several themes that return each season:

  • Literature: book presentations, meetings with authors, and writing workshops, often in collaboration with the Centro Iniziative Culturali di Angri.
  • Music: concerts, masterclasses with prominent artists, and tributes to Neapolitan song and the tradition of the serenade.
  • Theater and performance: plays, recitals, and evenings dedicated to the Neapolitan repertoire.
  • History and traditions: conferences and exhibitions on local events, from the earthquakes and eruptions that shaped the Agro area to popular devotion.
  • Visual arts and photography: exhibitions in the Pinacoteca of Castello Doria, with a special focus on archival images.
  • Film screenings: the most original section, built on footage filmed in Angri over the last forty years and preserved in the Teleangri1 video archive.
  • Science and astronomy: evenings of sky observation from the Castle Tower, with telescopes pointed at the celestial vault.

Castello Doria, the heart of the festival

The festival's symbolic venue is Castello Doria: the Atrium hosts concerts and shows, the Hall of Frescoes holds book presentations, the Pinacoteca hosts exhibitions, and in summer, the Tower becomes a true open-air planetarium. The second hub of the festival is the Casa del Cittadino, where more intimate meetings and workshops are held. On certain occasions, events extend to Piazza Doria and the historic center.

The 2025/2026 season

The 2025/2026 season was the festival's second, spanning the entire year: from the Pro Loco Christmas, which concluded in January 2026 with the "Serata Scarpettiana" in tribute to Eduardo Scarpetta, to the major exhibition "From the Bible to the Palette. Vincent van Gogh and the Painting of the Soul" inaugurated at Castello Doria on February 14, 2026; from the third edition of the School Orchestra Festival (April 27 โ€“ May 5, 2026), which brought over four hundred young musicians to the castle's Atrium, to the photography exhibition "Portraits of an Ancient Wait" by Luigi de Lucia (June 20 โ€“ 30, 2026), visited by nearly four thousand people in ten days.

A community project

What is striking about the Culture Festival is its participatory nature: the exhibited photographs come from the family albums of Angri residents, the films for the screenings come from a local television archive, and the musicians are largely students from local schools. It is a festival that does not import culture from the outside but builds it with those who live in the city, which is why it has managed to attract a large and diverse audience, from children in workshops to the elderly who recognize faces in vintage photos.

When to go and how to get around

Since the program is spread throughout the year, it is best to follow the announcements of Pro Loco Angri, which publishes appointments on its website as they are confirmed. However, the most intense moments are fairly stable: June, with exhibitions, concerts, and astronomical evenings linked to the patron saint's festival; spring, with school orchestras and major exhibitions; and the Christmas period, with concerts and dialect theater. In all cases, admission is free: a defining trait of the festival, reiterated by the organizers at every edition.

Culture Festival โ€” edition 2026

In 2026, the 2025/2026 season of the Culture Festival spanned the entire first semester: the "Serata Scarpettiana" in January closing the Pro Loco Christmas, the major exhibition on Vincent van Gogh inaugurated at Castello Doria on February 14, the third edition of the School Orchestra Festival from April 27 to May 5 with over four hundred young musicians, and the photography exhibition "Portraits of an Ancient Wait" from June 20 to 30, which attracted nearly four thousand visitors. Free admission to all events.

The 2026 Culture Festival

The second season of the Pro Loco Angri festival confirmed the year-long festival formula. 2026 opened in January with the "Serata Scarpettiana", a tribute to Eduardo Scarpetta that concluded the "Pro Loco Christmas" program, preceded by the concert of the "Incanto di Natale" polyphonic choir.

On February 14, 2026, Castello Doria inaugurated "From the Bible to the Palette. Vincent van Gogh and the Painting of the Soul", a follow-up to the previous exhibition dedicated to the Dutch painter and a new success with the public during the spring. In May, the Hall of Frescoes hosted the presentation of the novel "Ancora un poco, un poco appena" by Luigi Novi, dedicated to Saint Alfonso Maria Fusco.

Between April 27 and May 5, the castle's Atrium became the venue for the third edition of the School Orchestra Festival โ€” "Angri City of Music" โ€” with local school ensembles and over four hundred young instrumentalists on stage. The semester closed in June with "Portraits of an Ancient Wait", the photography exhibition by Luigi de Lucia in the Pinacoteca of Castello Doria (June 20 โ€“ 30), dedicated to the anticipation of the patron saint's festival and enriched by the appendix "Once Upon a Time in Angri": nearly four thousand visitors in ten days.

As always, all events were free of charge, in line with a festival designed as a cultural service for the city of Angri and the entire Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area.
