Celebrating the Matese mountain potato in the highest village of the Caserta province
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every summer, the small village of Letino, in the province of Caserta, comes alive for the Letino Potato Festival, one of the most beloved gastronomic events in the Matese Regional Park. Here, in the highest municipality of the Caserta area, at an altitude of over 1,000 meters, the mountain potato has always been a pillar of the local peasant economy and traditional cuisine.
The potatoes grown in Letino thrive in an unspoiled environment, following traditional farming methods. They are distinguished by their firm texture, intense flavor, and versatility in the kitchen. In the past, the famous Matese potato supported a thriving trade that reached Naples and Caserta, and it served as the base for peasant soups and stews, including the traditional 'minestra cusanara'.
The heart of the event is the country-style lunch, where the potato becomes the star of a rich and genuine menu: gnocchi, fritters, roasted potatoes, rustic pies, and many other traditional recipes. It is an opportunity to rediscover the authentic flavors of the mountains and the conviviality of village festivals.
The festival is also an invitation to discover Letino and its surroundings: the artificial lake, the medieval castle with the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Castello, the trails of the Matese Regional Park, and the Grotta del Cauto carved by the Lete River. Awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, the village perfectly blends nature, history, and culinary tradition.
Organized to promote the local product and the agri-food culture of the area, the Letino Potato Festival is much more than a gastronomic event: it is a testament to the rural soul of an inland Campania village, a guardian of ancient knowledge and a mountain landscape of rare beauty.
For the 2026 edition, the organizers have not yet published the official date of the Letino Potato Festival. Based on previous editions, the festival is expected in the heart of summer in the village of Letino, within the Matese Regional Park.
