The historic parade of Borgo Dora featuring La Rusnenta, Gianduja, and Giacometta
In the heart of Borgo Dora, amidst the stalls of the famous Balon market, the Ancient Balon Carnival comes to life every year: a day entirely dedicated to masks, historical re-enactments, and Piedmontese folk traditions. Promoted by the Balon Merchants Association together with the Famija Turinèisa and local organizations, the event transforms the streets of the Turin district into an open-air stage, where history and folklore meet under the banner of carnival joy.
The absolute star is La Rusnenta, the iconic mask of the Balon, a symbol of the district's popular and ironic spirit. Beside her parade Gianduja and Giacometta, the most beloved masks of the Turin and Piedmontese tradition, who officially open the festivities alongside city authorities. Their presence highlights the deep bond between the Balon and the cultural identity of Turin, the capital city of the Piedmont Region.
The heart of the event is the historical re-enactment: numerous costumed groups guide the public through different eras, from Roman legions to medieval splendors, from eighteenth-century elegance to the Napoleonic era. The performances, featuring dances, flag-wavers, duels, and shows, take place on the Central Stage in Piazza Borgo Dora before a jury that awards the best group and the best performance.
The day begins with the vintage market and continues with guided tours to discover the district, entertainment for children, and the Balon Photo Contest, which invites enthusiasts and professionals to capture participants in period clothing along the streets of the neighborhood. An event that unites tradition, antiques, and community life in the most authentic district of Turin.
The event takes place in Borgo Dora, around Piazza Borgo Dora and in the streets of the Balon district (Via Vittorio Andreis area), in Turin. The Central Stage is set up in Piazza Borgo Dora.
Borgo Dora is located just a few steps from Porta Palazzo, in the center of Turin, easily reachable on foot from the historic center and well served by GTT public transport.
Participation in the event and the parades is free. Guided tours may require booking.
