The amateur theatre festival at the Teatro delle Arti in Lastra a Signa
AMATEATRO – Enthusiasts on Stage is a festival dedicated to amateur theatre held at the Teatro delle Arti in Lastra a Signa, a town in the Metropolitan City of Florence, in the heart of Tuscany. Every spring, the stage on Via Matteotti welcomes local amateur companies for a month of performances that focus on the Tuscan vernacular, popular comedy, and the joy of coming together.
The heart of the festival is theatre in dialect: brilliant comedies, misunderstandings, sharp wit, and hilarious characters, all in the best Tuscan comic tradition. The amateur companies taking the stage come from across the Metropolitan City of Florence, bringing with them years of passion, teamwork, and a love for popular theatre. It is a grassroots theatre movement, made up of volunteers, evening rehearsals, and local bonds, capable of filling the hall and turning every evening into a small collective celebration.
AMATEATRO is more than just entertainment. As artistic director Francesco Giorgi notes, the festival represents the "plural vocation" of the Teatro delle Arti's programming, in line with the idea of the theatre as a "home for the city." This form of performance builds community, fosters social interaction, and often distinguishes itself through initiatives of solidarity and support for social projects, intertwining entertainment with authentic civic value.
The festival is held at the Teatro delle Arti in Lastra a Signa, a multifunctional space that hosts plays, performances, cinema, readings, exhibitions, and conferences. The facility features a main hall with 230 seats and a smaller hall with 90 seats, and is managed by the Compagnia Teatro popolare d'arte, directed by Francesco Giorgi. The festival is supported by the Municipality of Lastra a Signa and the Tuscany Region.
For those who love Tuscan comedy and the authenticity of theatre made with passion, AMATEATRO is an unmissable spring event in Lastra a Signa.
