About AMare Carnival

The AMare Carnival is Fiumicino's grand festival, organized by the local Pro Loco with municipal support. Every year, masked groups, marching bands, and floats parade along Via della Torre Clementina and through the heart of Borgo Valadier, led by Saltafiume, the city's iconic mask. This free, popular event is designed for families and children, blending maritime traditions, street entertainment, and a craft market just steps from the canal harbor.

The Carnival of the Roman Coast

The AMare Carnival is the most anticipated carnival event in Fiumicino, located in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. Organized by the Fiumicino Pro Loco with the patronage of the Municipality of Fiumicino, the event brings Borgo Valadier and the canal harbor promenade to life every winter, turning Via della Torre Clementina into a vibrant corridor of colors, confetti, and music. The nameโ€”a play on words meaning both "at sea" and "to love"โ€”perfectly captures the spirit of the festival: a celebration rooted in the sea and the city's maritime identity.

Saltafiume, the city's mask

The parade is traditionally led by Saltafiume, the official mask of the Fiumicino Carnival, followed by the Pro Loco Marching Band. Alongside, masked groups, local associations, and decorated bicycles and motorcycles join the procession. In recent years, the Fiumicino Motoclub has participated with riders in Templar costumes, creating one of the most photographed moments of the day. Having its own unique mask sets the AMare Carnival apart from other coastal parades: it is not just entertainment, but a civic ritual that the people of Fiumicino truly call their own.

The return of the floats

For years, the event relied primarily on walking masked groups. The 2026 edition, the thirty-sixth, marked the return of allegorical floats after a nine-year absence: four floats traveled along Via della Torre Clementina, three created by associations from Maccarese and one by the National Firefighters Association. This growth is a testament to the volunteer work of local groups who spend months building structures, costumes, and choreography.

More than just a parade: The Children's Carnival

The program extends beyond the procession. The well-established format includes a day dedicated primarily to the little ones with the Children's Carnival in Piazza Grassi, featuring street performers, games, entertainment, and the distribution of confetti and sweets to children in costume. This is complemented by a craft market along Via della Torre Clementina, offering local products, handmade crafts, and food stalls, followed by afternoon performances, music, and shows by local dance schools.

  • Parade of masked groups and floats along the canal harbor
  • Procession led by the Saltafiume mask and the Pro Loco Band
  • Children's Carnival with street performers and entertainment
  • Craft market and food stalls
  • Local dance school performances and awards ceremony

A free event open to all

Admission is completely free and no booking is required: simply show up, preferably in costume. Local associations, schools, and groups wishing to participate with a float or a masked group can contact the Fiumicino Pro Loco directly in the weeks leading up to the event. For the municipal administration, the AMare Carnival represents "a moment of community, identity, and regional promotion," and the day successfully attracts families from across the coast, from Maccarese and Passoscuro to the nearby Lido di Ostia.

Fiumicino beyond the airport

Those who only know Fiumicino for its international airport will discover a different city during this event: Borgo Valadier with its 19th-century houses, the fishing fleet moored along the canal, the seafood restaurants overlooking the water, and the proximity to the ruins of Ostia Antica and the Port of Trajan. The Carnival is an excellent opportunity to combine the festivities with a seaside stroll and a seafood lunch, experiencing the village at its most lively and bustling time of winter.

AMare Carnival โ€” edition 2026

The 36th edition of the AMare Carnival took place in Fiumicino over two Sundays, February 8 and 15, 2026, featuring the long-awaited return of allegorical floats after nine years. Two free days filled with a craft market, street performers, children's entertainment, and the Grand Parade along Via della Torre Clementina, led by the Saltafiume mask and the Fiumicino Pro Loco Marching Band.

Two Sundays of celebration on the canal harbor

The 36th edition of the AMare Carnival adopted a two-day format: Sunday, February 8, 2026, was dedicated primarily to children and activities throughout the village, while Sunday, February 15, was reserved for the Grand Parade. The event, organized by the Fiumicino Pro Loco with municipal patronage, took place entirely along Via della Torre Clementina and the squares of Borgo Valadier, with free admission.

The grand return of the floats

The most anticipated moment was the return of the allegorical floats, which had been absent from the parade for nine years: four floats in total, three built by associations from Maccarese and one by the National Firefighters Association. Alongside them, masked groups, decorated bicycles, and the Fiumicino Motoclub riders in Templar costumes paraded through the streets.
