Every year, during the last weekend of December, the village of Castel di Guido transforms into a small Nativity village. Situated along the Via Aurelia, about twenty kilometers from the center of Rome, this district of the 13th Municipality preserves a rural soul rarely found in the Capital: fields, historic farmhouses, and the vast Municipal Agricultural Farm, one of the largest public farms in Italy, managed by Rome Capital and the Lazio Region.

A Bethlehem in the Roman countryside

The living nativity comes to life around the Municipal Agricultural Farmhouse on Via Sodini, where dozens of costumed performers reconstruct the streets and workshops of Palestine from two thousand years ago. The path leads visitors from the market square to the hut of the Holy Family, passing through scenes of daily life: the blacksmith, the carpenter, the baker, the spinner, and the shepherd with his flock.

Ancient crafts and rural culture

The heart of the event is the rediscovery of ancient crafts and the rural culture that has defined the Roman countryside for centuries. Around lit fires, artisans demonstrate the art of woodworking, wool spinning, and bread making, while the aromas of traditional foods accompany the stroll. It is an opportunity to rediscover, in a popular and spiritual key, the gestures and wisdom of the past.

The Castel di Guido Living Nativity is born from the commitment of local associations and committees—including the Lorium Association, the Castel di Guido Committee, and the local Civil Protection—who involve residents of all ages in setting up the scenes every year. More than just a show, it is a collective ritual that strengthens the identity of a small community immersed in nature, attracting visitors from all over Rome and the nearby coast. In the Christmas calendar of the Province of Rome and Lazio, it remains one of the most genuine and heartfelt events.
