In Alvito, a medieval village in the Comino Valley in the province of Frosinone, Carnival has always been one of the most cherished winter events. Between February and March, the historic center, overlooked by the Cantelmo Castle, transforms into an open-air stage where masks, confetti, and joy delight both young and old. The Alvito Carnival is organized by the Pro Loco of Alvito and serves as a community highlight, bringing together the town's districts for a day of shared celebration.

The allegorical float parade

The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats, passionately built by local groups, which march alongside masks and folk troupes through the village streets. The procession starts in the Fontanelle area and reaches Piazza della Vittoria, the hub for children's entertainment, music, and festivities. The day blends the spontaneity of a village carnival with the creativity of the floats, creating a warm atmosphere that attracts families and visitors from across the valley.

Traditions: King Carnival and the Caciata

As tradition dictates, the festival culminates with the sentencing and burning of King Carnival, the effigy that symbolically marks the end of the carnival season. For dining, the unmissable event is the pasta party offered to all participants, while the village bakeries fill with the scent of Caciata, the typical Alvito pastry: a thin crust filled with mountain ricotta, chocolate chips, and cinnamon, hand-crimped according to an ancient local recipe.
