The festival of transhumance in the heart of the Alps
The Alpenfest is the grand festival of transhumance in Livigno, a well-known Alpine resort in the Province of Sondrio, Valtellina. Every September, at the end of the grazing season, the cattle return to the valley after months spent on high-altitude pastures: a moment that the community celebrates with an event full of tradition, color, and music.
The heart of the festival is the parade of animals, led through the village streets adorned with decorated bells and floral garlands. Alongside the herds, the people of Livigno parade in traditional costume, accompanied by folk groups and the band, in a procession that intertwines identity, memory, and celebration. It is an image that immediately conveys the deep connection between Livigno and its mountains.
The Alpenfest is not just a parade: the program includes the livestock exhibition, with the crowning of the exhibition queen, milking and shearing competitions, as well as moments of folk music and conviviality. The event takes place between the Isola area and the hamlet of Trepalle, one of the highest in Europe, involving the entire community in a grand village festival.
For Livigno, the Alpenfest is much more than a tourist event: it is the celebration of a pastoral culture that has shaped the territory and its people. For the visitor, it is an opportunity to discover the traditions of Valtellina up close and to experience the authenticity of an Alpine festival that is still deeply rooted.
The 2026 edition of Alpenfest takes place on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20. On Saturday, the festival enlivens the Isola area of Livigno from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM, while on Sunday it moves to Trepalle. The program celebrates the return of cattle to the valley after grazing with parades of animals adorned with decorated bells and floral garlands, traditional costumes, folk groups, a livestock exhibition with the crowning of the exhibition queen, milking and shearing competitions, and music.
