The Sicani Mountains village festival celebrating almonds and folk traditions
The Almond and Folklore Festival takes place in Prizzi, a charming village perched on the Sicani Mountains in the province of Palermo, in the heart of inland Sicily. The town, whose origins date back to the ancient Elymian-Sican settlement of Hippana, still retains its medieval appearance, with narrow, winding streets climbing around the ruins of the ancient castle. It is in this setting that, every year on the third weekend of June, one of the most cherished events for the local community comes to life.
The event was created to showcase one of the signature products of the Prizzi countryside: the almond. The fertile lands surrounding the town, rich in pure water, have made Prizzi a land of cereals, legumes, dairy products, and almonds. During the festival, the streets of the historic center are filled with stalls dedicated to almond pastries: cookies, traditional sweets, and specialties prepared according to ancient recipes passed down from generation to generation.
Alongside the gastronomic theme, the festival showcases Sicilian folklore. The program traditionally includes folk music concerts, parades of traditional clothing and costumes, and entertainment that brings the customs and habits of rural Sicily back to life. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Hippana Prizzi, which manages visitor hospitality and daily entertainment, with activities generally starting in the late afternoon, around 5:00 PM.
The festival is also an excellent opportunity to visit the village and its surroundings. Prizzi is, in fact, also known for another famous tradition, the Easter Ballo dei Diavoli (Dance of the Devils), and is included in the "Borghi dei Tesori" circuit. Those who reach the Municipality of Prizzi during the festival can combine the discovery of local gastronomy with that of the historical and landscape heritage of the Sicani Mountains, in one of the most authentic and lesser-known areas of Sicily.
The 2026 Almond and Folklore Festival returns to Prizzi, in the Sicani Mountains in the province of Palermo, on the third weekend of June. The event follows the proven formula: tastings of almond sweets and pastries, folk music concerts, and traditional costume parades through the streets of the historic center, with activities starting in the afternoon. The detailed program and final schedule will be announced by the Pro Loco Hippana Prizzi closer to the event.
Prizzi is located in the hinterland of the province of Palermo, in the Sicani Mountains. By car, it can be reached via the SS118 or the SS189; from Palermo, the journey takes about an hour and a half. The nearest train stations are in Lercara Friddi and other towns in the valley, while the reference airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino.
Access to the event and the streets of the historic center is free; tastings and local products are available for purchase at the stalls.
