The autumn transhumance in Val di Funes, featuring flower-adorned cows and a traditional farmers' festival in St. Magdalena
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Almabtrieb in St. Magdalena is one of the most cherished traditions in Val di Funes, located in the municipality of Funes/Villnöß, in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). Every year around mid-September, it marks the return to the valley of the livestock that spent the summer grazing on the high-altitude pastures of Gampenalm and Dusleralm. It is a time when the farming community celebrates the end of the alpine summer and the safe return of their animals, a ritual repeated for generations beneath the famous Odle (Geisler) peaks.
The highlight of the day is the parade: the cows are decorated with mountain flowers, mirrors, and large bells, creating a spectacle of color and sound. The procession winds through the valley landscape, reaching St. Magdalena around noon. The festive parade moves from Ranui towards the Bergerplatz in St. Magdalena, where the celebrations continue. Witnessing the arrival of the decorated livestock against the backdrop of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites is an experience that blends folklore, nature, and traditional mountain life.
The transhumance is the centerpiece of a true village festival: the day begins on the meadow with South Tyrolean gastronomic specialties, while the Villnöß Brass Band (Musikkapelle Villnöß) provides entertainment in the afternoon with a concert, followed by dance music. Visitors can enjoy local products and traditional dishes, offering a taste of one of the most authentic valleys in South Tyrol. The festival takes place regardless of the weather, thanks to a large marquee set up for the occasion.
Unlike more tourist-oriented events, the Val di Funes Almabtrieb retains a genuine character deeply rooted in the daily life of the local farms. It is the perfect opportunity to experience Ladin-Tyrolean culture, listen to folk music, savor rustic cuisine, and admire one of the most photographed alpine landscapes in Italy. The event is organized with the support of the local community and the Val di Funes Tourist Board.
The 2026 edition of the Almabtrieb in St. Magdalena, in the municipality of Funes/Villnöß (Province of Bolzano, South Tyrol), will be held as per tradition around mid-September. The precise date has not yet been published: it will be announced by the Val di Funes Tourist Board closer to the event.
As every year, the program includes the descent of the livestock from the Gampenalm and Dusleralm pastures, with cows adorned with flowers, mirrors, and bells, the parade towards the Bergerplatz, and the festival on the meadow with South Tyrolean specialties and folk music.
St. Magdalena can be reached by car via the A22 Brenner motorway, taking the Chiusa/Klausen exit and following the road up the Val di Funes valley. During summer and event periods, shuttle bus services operate, and traffic restrictions may apply towards Ranui and Zans: it is advisable to check in advance and use the designated parking areas.
The Almabtrieb typically takes place in mid-September, with the livestock arriving around noon. The exact date is announced by the tourist office closer to the event.
