The traditional bread festival of Alimena, in the heart of the Madonie mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Alimena, a small village in the Province of Palermo perched at an altitude of approximately 750 meters in the heart of the Madonie Park, the Bread Festival pays homage to one of the area's most iconic products: durum wheat bread, made using ancient recipes passed down from family to family. In a town that has always relied on cereal farming, where wheat is the primary crop alongside almonds, fava beans, and olives, bread is not just food, but a true cultural heritage.
The event takes place at Parco della Mazza, which for one evening becomes an authentic laboratory of flavors. Along the stalls set up in the greenery, visitors can taste various local bread varieties, accompanied by traditional specialties: bread with sausage, boiled chickpeas, hard-boiled eggs, pecorino cheese, cured meats, extra virgin olive oil, wine, and the typical biscuit that farmers once dipped in wine. A culinary journey that tells the story of the genuine, rustic cuisine of central Sicily.
The festival is more than just gastronomy: alongside the tastings, there is an exhibition of ancient agricultural tools and equipment and demonstrations of the various stages of harvesting and wheat processing, from sowing to baking. It is a way to preserve the memory of the rural world of Alimena and to pass on the skills and knowledge of their grandparents to the younger generation.
The event is organized by the "A Casazza" Association of Alimena, whose name recalls the historic sacred representation of the local Holy Week. The association promotes the enhancement of the town's traditions and has made the Bread Festival a highly anticipated summer event for the community and visitors to the Madonie.
Included in the calendar of summer festivals in the Madonie villages, the Alimena Bread Festival attracts residents, emigrants returning for the holidays, and tourists looking for the authentic Sicily of the hinterland every year. It is the ideal opportunity to discover a village far from mass tourism routes, immersed in a landscape of cereal hills and mountains, and to savor the true flavors of the Sicilian baking tradition.
The Alimena Bread Festival returns in the summer of 2026, confirming a well-established appointment in the calendar of festivals in the Madonie villages. At the moment, the organizers have not yet released the dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition.
Based on previous editions, the event traditionally takes place in the month of August at Parco della Mazza, in the evening, with tastings of durum wheat bread, cheeses, cured meats, and other specialties of central Sicily, in addition to displays of agricultural tools and demonstrations of wheat processing.
