The Nativity comes to life among the trulli of the Rione Aia Piccola

In the heart of the Itria Valley, nestled among the conical roofs of the UNESCO-listed trulli, the Alberobello Living Nativity stands as one of the most anticipated and heartfelt Christmas events in Puglia. First staged in 1971, it is now one of Italy's most enduring Nativity representations, celebrating its 55th edition in December 2025. The setting is truly unique: the Rione Aia Piccola, the most authentic and least touristy district of Alberobello, where inhabited trulli are transformed into homes, workshops, and stables of a Bethlehem reconstructed in Puglia.
The visit follows a walking route that winds through the narrow lanes of the district; visitors are immersed in the scene rather than acting as passive spectators. Along the hour-long path, ancient crafts—the blacksmith, the carpenter, the spinner, the baker, the cobbler—come to life alongside scenes of popular life that recount hardship, anticipation, and hope, leading up to the final Nativity tableau. The story is brought to life by over 200 performers—children, youth, and adults from the community—who renew this collective ritual every year after months of preparation.
What sets the Alberobello Living Nativity apart is its choice of a narrative theme that changes with every edition, guiding the dramaturgy of the route. The 2025 edition was titled 'How Long the Night Lasts' (Quanto dura la notte), a journey through weariness, fear, and solitude, but also care and anticipation, leading to the light of the birth; in 2024, the central theme was 'Living Stones of Stumbling'. This approach transforms the performance into an emotional and spiritual experience, far beyond a simple folkloric reconstruction.
The event is organized by the 'Da Betlemme a Gerusalemme' Social Promotion Association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Alberobello, in the province of Bari. It is more than just a seasonal appointment; it is the result of the work of an entire community that spends the year sewing costumes, building sets, and rehearsing scenes. During the same period, the town also hosts the Presepe di Luce (Nativity of Light), a free-entry path of light installations that stretches from the Trullo Sovrano through the historic center to the Rione Aia Piccola, completing the Christmas atmosphere of the city of trulli.
Visiting the Alberobello Living Nativity means experiencing Christmas in one of Italy's most evocative settings, away from the crowds and in touch with an authentic popular tradition. Admission is free, but participation requires mandatory booking to manage visitor flow and preserve the quality of the experience within the district's narrow alleys.
At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Alberobello Living Nativity have not yet been published.
