Floats, masquerade groups, and music in the heart of Agira
The Agira Carnival is one of the most anticipated winter events in Agira, a charming village perched in the heart of the Enna province, in Sicily. For a few days between February and March, the town transforms into a grand open-air stage: allegorical floats, masquerade groups, confetti, and music take over Piazza Garibaldi and the characteristic narrow streets of the historic center.
The Carnival is a tradition deeply rooted in the life of the Agira community. The masks and allegorical floats are the result of extensive craftsmanship: they are designed and built by hand by artists, tailors, and local youth groups who dedicate weeks to their preparation. The result is a parade of spectacular figures and meticulously detailed costumes that bring joy and color to the streets.
The heart of the festival lies in the parades of allegorical floats and masquerade groups, which wind through the center to reach Piazza Garibaldi. Here, performances take place, and groups compete for awards for the best masks, most original floats, and the finest makeup and costumes, alongside social media-based prizes. There are also moments dedicated to children, with the Children's Carnival, and evenings enlivened by the Orkestreet Cittร di Agira band and DJ sets.
The event is organized by the Municipality of Agira in collaboration with Legambiente Agira, with the involvement of group leaders, teachers, and many volunteers. It is a popular festival that, year after year, confirms the strong bond between Agira and its Carnival.
The 2026 edition of the Agira Carnival kicked off on Saturday, February 14, with the Children's Carnival, a day dedicated to the little ones with individual mask parades, gadgets, entertainment, and evening DJ sets.
The grand parade planned for Sunday, February 15, starting from Via Vittorio Emanuele and parading through the square, was postponed due to bad weather and a yellow alert issued for the province of Enna. The decision was made jointly by group leaders, teachers, organizers, and the municipal administration to ensure the safety of participants and the public. The events were rescheduled for Tuesday, February 17, and Saturday, February 21.
The artistic direction was entrusted to Ivana Savarino and Mario Consoli, with hosting by Serena Buscemi and Danilo Alleruzzo and musical entertainment by the Orkestreet Cittร di Agira band. The festival is organized by the Municipality of Agira in collaboration with Legambiente Agira.
