The Agerola Via Crucis, also known as the Good Friday Procession, is one of the oldest and most attended Passion of Christ re-enactments in Campania. It takes place in the municipality of Agerola, in the Province of Naples, a village nestled between the Lattari Mountains and the Amalfi Coast, also famous as the gateway to the Path of the Gods. Every year, on the night of Good Friday, the entire town transforms into a large open-air theater illuminated by torches, where faith becomes a collective spectacle.
The procession has its roots in an ancient penitential rite, but its current form was born in 1963 from an idea by Father Domenico Scala, parish priest of the Santissima Annunziata in San Lazzaro, who wanted to radically renew the ancient event by enriching it with numerous acted scenes. The original music accompanying the procession was composed in the seventies by the maestro Aurelio Fierro. Today, the organization is entrusted to the Associazione Venerdì Santo Agerolese, founded in 2017 and composed largely of local young people who dedicate many months of the year to preparing the event.
What makes the Agerola Via Crucis unique is its extraordinary length: the procession covers more than twelve kilometers on foot, crossing the various hamlets and districts of the village, from San Lazzaro to the sites of the crucifixion. It is considered one of the longest Good Friday processions in Italy, a journey undertaken with sacrifice and devotion to renew the rite of the Passion on the day of Christ's death.
The performance is marked by numerous living tableaux, each set up in a different location along the route. Over two hundred costumed participants take part, with horses, swords, shields, and helmets reconstructed in minute detail. Among the scenes re-enacted:
Many participants pass down their roles for decades: the collective memory of Agerola guards historical performers who have worn the same costumes for forty or sixty years, a sign of a deep bond between the community and its tradition.
The costumes are made by local seamstresses, while the props are reconstructed with philological care. More than just an event, the Via Crucis is experienced by the inhabitants as an intangible heritage of the community, a rite that weaves together spirituality, popular theater, and Agerolese identity. For visitors to the Amalfi Coast, it represents a unique opportunity to discover one of the most authentic expressions of the Campanian Holy Week.
Good Friday 2026 falls on April 3: this is the date on which, according to tradition, the community of Agerola renews its historic Passion of Christ procession. The event maintains the structure consolidated over more than sixty years: the departure from the San Lazzaro hamlet, the long journey of over twelve kilometers through the village districts, and the numerous living tableaux culminating in the crucifixion scene.
At the moment, no specific official details have been published regarding the 2026 edition (final times, any route variations). Information will be updated as soon as the Associazione Venerdì Santo Agerolese releases the program. For confirmation, it is advisable to contact the Municipality of Agerola and the parish of the Santissima Annunziata.
The performance unfolds along the streets and hamlets of Agerola (NA), starting from the San Lazzaro area. The route, over twelve kilometers long, crosses the town center and the village districts.
By car: Agerola can be reached from the Amalfi Coast (SS163) or from Castellammare di Stabia. By train: Castellammare di Stabia station (Circumvesuviana), then SITA bus to Agerola. By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about an hour and a half away.
Admission is free. Comfortable clothing, suitable walking shoes, and a flashlight are recommended, as the event takes place in the evening. Given the crowds, it is advisable to arrive early and check for traffic changes.
