The grand gathering of vintage cars across Avezzano, L'Aquila, and the villages of Abruzzo
The Abruzzo Gran Tour and Avezzano Circuit is the benchmark event for historic motoring in the heart of the central Apennines. Organized by the Abruzzo Drivers Club of Avezzano, the event brings together dozens of international crews each year in highly collectible vintage cars, following an itinerary that crosses the province of L'Aquila and touches some of the most beautiful villages in Abruzzo. The event is part of the ASI Circuito Tricolore calendar, the prestigious national circuit of the Automotoclub Storico Italiano, and represents a rare union of passion for engines, regional promotion, and the enhancement of cultural heritage.
The route is not merely a speed race but a true cultural and tourist grand tour that winds for hundreds of kilometers through mountains, plateaus, lakes, and perched villages. The cars depart from Avezzano, in the Marsica region, and reach L'Aquila, a city that lends a unique atmosphere to the event. Along the way, participants encounter iconic locations of inland Abruzzo such as the Gran Sasso, the Campo Imperatore plateaus, medieval villages, the murals of Aielli with its Borgo Universo, as well as churches and parish buildings that tell the ancient history of the region.
The social highlight of the event is the Avezzano City Grand Gala, an evening held in the city center featuring a red-carpet car parade, live music, and dance performances. Within this setting, the Pietro Di Lorenzo Concours d'Elegance takes place, dedicated to the memory of a figure linked to the event's history, featuring awards for the most elegant automobiles. The event has a strong international reach, with crews arriving from several continents and twinning programs with major vintage car rallies abroad.
By traversing the province of L'Aquila and the wider Abruzzo territory, the Abruzzo Gran Tour is much more than a gathering for enthusiasts: it is an opportunity for tourism and cultural promotion that draws attention to the region's landscapes, villages, and traditions. The passage of vintage cars through historic centers attracts crowds of spectators along the roads, turning each stop into a widespread festival that unites residents and visitors in the spirit of automotive history and Abruzzese identity.
The 15th edition of the Abruzzo Gran Tour, valid for the ASI Circuito Tricolore, took place from June 30 to July 5, 2026, starting from Avezzano with an itinerary dedicated to L'Aquila, Italian Capital of Culture 2026, and the imposing Gran Sasso d'Italia. Numerous international crews from several continents traveled the roads of inland Abruzzo aboard highly valuable vintage cars.
After departing from Avezzano, the route reached L'Aquila, with stops in Navelli, Fonte Cerreto, Castel del Monte, Santo Stefano di Sessanio, and Campo Imperatore, the historic Collemaggio circuit, Rocca di Mezzo, and the murals of Aielli with Borgo Universo, continuing to Lake Turano and Carsoli. The Avezzano City Grand Gala, in Piazza Risorgimento, hosted the Pietro Di Lorenzo Concours d'Elegance with a red-carpet parade, live music, and dance performances. The Sunday concluded with the awards ceremony.
Avezzano is easily accessible by car via the A25 Rome-Pescara motorway (Avezzano exit) and by train via the Avezzano railway station on the Rome-Pescara line. L'Aquila and the villages on the itinerary are easily reached by car.
The car parades in historic centers and the passage of the convoy along the roads are free to attend. Participation with a vehicle requires registration through the organizers.
We recommend booking accommodation in Avezzano and L'Aquila well in advance during the event days. Check the official event channels for schedules and specific passage points of the convoy.
