About Atessa Patronal Festivals

From August 15th to 18th, Atessa celebrates its Patronal Festivals, a tradition spanning over three centuries in the historic center of this Abruzzo village. Four days dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, Saint Roch, the patron saint Saint Leucio, and Saint Emidius, featuring religious rites, the traditional Assumption Market, artistic illuminations, marching bands, concerts in the square, and a grand fireworks finale. A deeply felt Ferragosto event for the Atessa community in the province of Chieti.

The Patronal Festivals of Atessa

Every year, from August 15th to 18th, the historic center of Atessa, in the province of Chieti, comes alive for the Patronal Festivals, a tradition rooted in the community's identity for over three hundred years. In the heart of the Abruzzo Ferragosto, the village dresses up with artistic illuminations that light up Piazza Garibaldi and Corso Vittorio Emanuele, guiding residents and visitors through four days of devotion, tradition, and spectacle.

The four days and the saints celebrated

Each day is dedicated to a sacred figure particularly dear to the people of Atessa:

  • August 15 — Maria SS. Assunta: celebrations open early in the morning with the traditional Assumption Market, filling the streets of the center with stalls and local products.
  • August 16 — Saint Roch: the day continues with religious services and, in the evening, shows, live music, and street performers.
  • August 17 — Saint Leucio, patron saint of Atessa: this is the most solemn day, opened by the parade of the Atessa City Band with majorettes, followed by urban trekking and evening concerts.
  • August 18 — Saint Emidius: the grand finale, featuring the main concert of the event and the traditional fireworks display that concludes the festivities.

An event between faith and community

The Patronal Festivals represent the most anticipated moment of the summer in Atessa and are part of a rich calendar of events promoted by the Municipality of Atessa, which offers dozens of appointments between July and August every year. Liturgical rites in honor of the patron saints are accompanied by concerts, shows, exhibitions, cultural walks, and initiatives for all ages, transforming the squares and alleys of the historic center into open-air stages.

Atessa, a village in Abruzzo

Located in the province of Chieti, in the hilly hinterland of Abruzzo just a few kilometers from the Val di Sangro, Atessa is one of the most populous villages in the area and preserves a medieval historic center rich in churches, palaces, and evocative views. The Patronal Festivals offer the ideal opportunity to discover the town, its traditions, and its hospitality, in a festive atmosphere that blends the sacred and the profane in the true spirit of the Abruzzo Ferragosto.

Atessa Patronal Festivals — edition 2026

The Patronal Festivals of Atessa are expected to return, as per tradition, in mid-August 2026 in the village's historic center, honoring the patron saints. At the moment, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Municipality of Atessa: the event usually takes place from August 15th to 18th, with religious rites, the Assumption Market, illuminations, concerts in the square, and a final fireworks display.

The 2026 edition of the Patronal Festivals of Atessa is expected, as every year, during the Ferragosto period. As of today, the Municipality of Atessa has not yet published the final dates or the detailed program with artists and events. According to established tradition, the festivities are held from August 15th to 18th in the historic center, with celebrations in honor of Maria SS. Assunta, Saint Roch, the patron Saint Leucio, and Saint Emidius. For updates, it is recommended to consult the official channels of the Municipality and the portal viviatessa.it.
