The festival of winemakers and dry-stone walls in Valmorbia, Vallarsa
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The 98 Terrazze festival takes place in Vallarsa, a side valley of the Vallagarina in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), specifically in the Valmorbia area and the hamlets of Parrocchia and Camposilvano. The name itself reflects the identity of the place: a landscape shaped by a dense network of dry-stone walls and hundreds of small terraces carved meter by meter into the forest and slopes, where vines have been cultivated on steep hillsides for generations.
Valmorbia, in the narrowest part of the Vallarsa valley, preserves about one hundred and fifty terraces located between the Leno stream and the mountain slopes. It was a thriving viticultural land between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when local wine was exported as far as Vienna and to Northern markets. Today, many terraces have returned to the forest, and few winemakers remain to tend these challenging vineyards, preserving grape varieties such as fragola, solaris, and moscato. The festival was created precisely to ensure this heritage is not forgotten.
The heart of the event is the vin de caneva competition, featuring wine produced by families and stored in caneve, the old village cellars. Producers bring their bottles for comparison, and this ritual serves as a backdrop for tastings, meetings, and community storytelling. Since the first edition in 2022, which brought together about twenty participants over three days, the event has woven together wine, history, and local culture.
Over time, the 98 Terrazze program has expanded to include lectures, exhibitions (ranging from the valley's rocks and minerals to agricultural restoration themes), and cultural exchange moments. In recent editions, the festival has opened up to meetings with traditional costume groups from Tyrol, Bavaria, South Tyrol, and Vorarlberg, featuring organ concerts performed by organists from the Cathedrals of Trento and Kufstein: a symbolic bridge between Vallarsa and German-speaking alpine cultures. The event is also part of the rich summer calendar of Vallarsa, alongside appointments such as the Ganzega del Bosco.
Participating in 98 Terrazze means walking through restored vineyards, listening to the stories of those who still work the stone and the vine, and tasting the genuine flavors of a secluded valley in the Municipality of Vallarsa. It is an invitation to view the Trentino landscape not as a postcard, but as the result of patient, collective work passed down from generation to generation.
The dates for the 2026 edition of 98 Terrazze have not yet been announced. The festival, organized by the Pro Loco Vallarsa, usually takes place in early August in the hamlets of Valmorbia (Trentino, province of Trento) and revolves around the vin de caneva competition, local wine tastings, lectures, and exhibitions dedicated to terraced viticulture and dry-stone walls.
The detailed program will be published by the Pro Loco Vallarsa and on the valley's tourist portal when available.
Vallarsa can be reached from Rovereto (A22 Rovereto Sud exit) by traveling up the SS46 along the Leno valley. The hamlets of Valmorbia, Parrocchia, and Camposilvano are located along the valley's provincial road; traveling by car is recommended, with parking available near the festival sites.
The festival is usually held in mid-August as part of the Vallarsa summer calendar.
The program and details are published by the Pro Loco Vallarsa and on the valley's tourist portal (visitvallarsa.it).
