Village life returns to the Christmas of memory in Roscigno Vecchia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
There are living nativity scenes set up in a neighborhood, a cave, or along a street in a historic center. In Roscigno, in the province of Salerno, the stage is an entire village: Roscigno Vecchia, the village abandoned in the early 20th century due to landslides and left suspended in time, with its square, the church of San Nicola di Bari, stone houses with peeling walls, and silent alleys. It is here that every December the 20th Century Living Nativity takes shape, a performance that has earned this corner of Campania the nickname of the «Pompeii of the 20th Century».
The guiding theme chosen by the organizers is clear from the title selected for the 2025 edition: «village life returns to the Christmas of memory». It is not just about reproducing the Nativity, but about restoring for a few hours the daily life of a Cilento farming community: women working in their homes, men in the fields and workshops, children in the alleys, and the life that revolved around the square and the church. The visit is narrated and theatrical, directed and voiced by Francesco Puccio, and guides visitors from scene to scene until the Nativity itself.
The route winds through the most hidden corners of the village and opens doors that remain closed all year round. Along the way, you will encounter:
It is an experience that works primarily thanks to the location: the winter twilight, the cobblestones, the stones, and the silence of the uninhabited village make any built scenery superfluous.
The 20th Century Living Nativity is not an isolated event. The 2025 edition was included in the «Terre Ritrovate — Journeys of Roots in the Calore Valley» project, dedicated to enhancing the cultural identity of six municipalities in the area: Castel San Lorenzo, Piaggine, Laurino, Sacco, Valle dell'Angelo, and Roscigno itself. The theme of returning to one's roots is particularly poignant in a village that has experienced abandonment and emigration: the nativity thus becomes a way to bring back to life, at least symbolically, a place that is already an open-air museum.
The event is promoted by the Municipality of Roscigno with the production of My Fair s.r.l. and the support of the Monte Pruno Foundation, in collaboration with the Pro Loco Roscigno Vecchia, the Youth Forum, the Terra Mia association, and the parish of San Nicola di Bari. The involvement is collective: in the 2025 edition, Mayor Pino Palmieri even dressed as one of the Three Wise Men, confirming how much the initiative is embraced by the entire town.
The event falls during the Christmas season, generally in the first half of December: the 2025 edition was held on Sunday, December 7th, with a meeting at 3:30 PM and the narrated tour starting at 4:00 PM. As this is a one-day event in a village without permanent services, it is always advisable to check the official communications from the Municipality of Roscigno before traveling, as the program may change in case of bad weather.
Roscigno Vecchia is already an unusual destination in any season, located within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. Seeing it come alive with performers, lights, and fires on a Sunday in December is an experience unlike any Christmas market: here, there is no Christmas scenery superimposed on the village; the village itself returns, for a few hours, to being inhabited.
At the moment, no official information has been released regarding the date and program of the 20th Century Living Nativity in Roscigno Vecchia for 2026. As this is a one-day Christmas event, the announcement usually arrives only in late autumn, when the Municipality of Roscigno and the organizing partners define the calendar of December initiatives.
Those wishing to attend can refer to the 2025 event as a general guideline: meeting in the early afternoon in front of the church of San Nicola, a narrated tour of the village from late afternoon, and tastings in the taverns set up in the stone houses. For updated information, it is advisable to follow the channels of the Municipality of Roscigno and contact the organizers at the number indicated in previous editions.
The nativity scene is held in the village of Roscigno Vecchia, about one kilometer from the current town of Roscigno (SA), in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park.
In recent editions, participation has been free of charge, with tastings in the taverns paid separately. Info and reservations: +39 389 0309729 (My Fair s.r.l.). Institutional reference: Municipality of Roscigno, Piazza Silvio Resciniti 1, tel. +39 0828 963043.
