About Zum Zeri Mycological Exhibition

Nestled in the woods of Passo dei Due Santi, in the heart of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, the Zum Zeri Mycological Exhibition draws enthusiasts and curious visitors every year to this small mountain village in the Municipality of Zeri, in the province of Massa-Carrara. Curated by the "Carlo Oriani" Mycological Association of Fidenza, the exhibition showcases numerous fungal species gathered in the surrounding forests, complemented by guided excursions, nature-focused workshops, and the renowned local mushroom-based cuisine. A summer event that blends nature, education, and gastronomy in one of the greenest corners of Lunigiana.

The Zum Zeri Mycological Exhibition

Every summer, the small resort of Zum Zeri, perched on the Passo dei Due Santi at an altitude of over 1,500 meters, becomes a meeting point for mushroom enthusiasts from the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The Zum Zeri Mycological Exhibition takes place within the Municipality of Zeri, in the province of Massa-Carrara, at the northernmost edge of Tuscany, where the Lunigiana region borders the Parma valleys.

A land devoted to mushrooms

The beech and fir forests surrounding the pass, where the Verde River rises, have always been among the most generous in the Apennines for mushroom foraging. It is no coincidence that the Zeri area is a destination, especially in season, for thousands of enthusiasts coming not only from Tuscany but also from nearby Liguria, Emilia, and Lombardy. The exhibition was created specifically to highlight this natural wealth and to promote mycological culture while respecting the environment.

Exhibition and activities

The heart of the event is the exhibition of fungal species collected in the local woods, presented and cataloged by experts from the "Carlo Oriani" Mycological Association of Fidenza, named after the association's founding mycologist. Alongside the exhibition, the program includes:

  • Identification and classification of collected specimens, with the support of qualified mycologists;
  • Educational sessions on responsible foraging and distinguishing between edible and toxic species;
  • Guided hikes in the pass's forests, along the trails toward Monte Fabei and Monte Spiaggi;
  • The opportunity to discover mushroom-based cuisine offered by the dining spots in Zum Zeri.

Nature, taste, and tradition

The Zum Zeri Mycological Exhibition is not just an opportunity to admire the variety of local mushrooms, but a complete experience that combines the discovery of the mountain environment, naturalistic knowledge, and the gastronomic tradition of Lunigiana. Guided walks allow visitors to observe mushrooms directly in their habitat, while local restaurants celebrate the star of the festival with dedicated menus. An ideal event for families, hikers, and nature lovers who want to spend a day in the open air in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
