About Youth Festival

Every summer, between late July and early August, the San Sebastiano Sports Center in Ponzano Romano hosts the Youth Festival. Launched in 2015 and organized by the local association Giovani a na certa maniera, the event features food stalls serving traditional Lazio dishes, themed nights, live music, motorcycle rallies, and children's activities. It is a popular gathering that brings together the entire community of this village in the province of Rome, overlooking the Tiber River.

A festival born from the local youth

The Youth Festival in Ponzano Romano is one of the most anticipated summer events in this small town within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in northern Lazio, on the border with Sabina and Umbria. The event began in 2015 thanks to a group of local young people who formed the Giovani a na certa maniera association, a group of volunteers who organize social, cultural, and recreational activities for the village throughout the year.

Don't let the name fool you: while primarily aimed at a younger audience, the festival is designed for all ages and attracts families, adults, and visitors from neighboring towns in the Tiber Valley every year.

Where it takes place

The event is held at the San Sebastiano Sports Center, on Via San Sebastiano, just outside the historic center of Ponzano Romano. It is a spacious, well-equipped outdoor area that allows for food stalls, a bar, a music stage, and a play area without congesting the alleys of the medieval village, which is perched on a spur overlooking the Tiber plain.

Dining: Traditional Lazio cuisine

The culinary aspect is the heart of the festival. The kitchens, managed by the association's volunteers, offer carefully curated menus every evening, drawing from Roman and Sabine recipes. Highlights from past editions include:

  • Pasta cacio e pepe, an timeless classic of Roman cuisine
  • Gnocchi al castrato (mutton gnocchi), a staple of the peasant tradition of northern Lazio
  • Truffle ravioli, a tribute to the local woods
  • Grilled sheep and padellaccia, slow-cooked and flavorful dishes typical of a true village festival
  • Themed nights dedicated to fish, Roman cuisine, and wild boar pappardelle

There is also an aperitif area and a bar that keep the square lively until late at night.

Music, entertainment, and motors

Every evening is accompanied by live music: past editions have featured tribute bands playing classic Italian singer-songwriter hits, DJ sets, and various entertainment performances. The program has also hosted motorcycle rallies, animation, and games for children, making the festival truly family-friendly.

A focus on solidarity

The event has always maintained a charitable spirit: in several editions, a portion of the proceeds from every menu sold has been donated to support local families, confirming the community spirit that drives the organizing association.

Ponzano Romano, the village and its surroundings

Ponzano Romano has just over a thousand inhabitants and retains a historic center clustered around the Colonna castle. A few kilometers away stands the Abbey of Sant'Andrea in Flumine, a Romanesque jewel nestled in the countryside along the Tiber, and nearby lies the Tevere-Farfa Nature Reserve, an ideal destination for hiking and birdwatching. The area is also known for its asparagus, a local product celebrated at another village festival. Attending the Youth Festival is therefore an excellent opportunity to discover a corner of Lazio still untouched by mass tourism, less than an hour from Rome.

Atmosphere

Those arriving in the evening will find the sports field lit up, the scent of the grill, long and noisy tables, young people serving at the tables, and music playing until late. It is a village festival in its most authentic form: no spectacle, just plenty of conviviality and affordable prices.
